Traffic Jams: World/Inferno Friendship Society - ‘Only Anarchists Are Pretty’
Traffic Jams: World/Inferno Friendship Society - ‘Only Anarchists Are Pretty’-November 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:12:04

What do , klezmer music, a man with the adopted last name Terricloth and Billy Joel have in common? Well, frankly, not a lot except for today’s Traffic Jam, which happens to be “” by the incomparable World/Inferno Friendship Society. I’ll explain that Billy Joel thing in a second.

If you’re not familiar with – and let’s face it, you probably aren’t – they were a revolving collective of musicians from Brooklyn, NY, that got its start way back in 1996. The band fused the sounds of punk, cabaret, jazz, klezmer and soul music into a totally unique vibe that carried the band through seven full-length albums, including a concept album about actor . Singer Jack Terricloth (real name Peter Ventantonio) was the only constant member throughout the band’s history .

Our song, “Only Anarchists Are Pretty,” was released on and is a reference to a shirt that Terricloth saw on a young woman in Prague while on tour in the 1990s. That shirt – unbeknownst to him at the time – was an homage to in the late 1970s as a celebration of nascent punk culture in her native England.

Ok, that takes care of Vivienne Westwood, klezmer and Terricloth, but what does Billy Joel have to do with any of it?

Here’s the thing: Billy Joel pretty much sucks (, and I don’t want to hear whining from the commentariat. This is ), but songs with a hard BJ vibe tend to rule (see also: ) and “Only Anarchists Are Pretty” definitely skews Joel, plus it adds one of the best singalong choruses to come out in the last 20 years.

So, drop the top on your shitbox, crank up the Blaupunkt and let ‘er rip with this absolute banger because it’s not going to stay summer forever.

Even A Fake Ferrari 250 GT Is Worth More Than A House
A replica Ferrari 250 GT California used in the 80s film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” sold at auction last week for almost $400,000. That seems like an awful lot of cash for a replica, especially considering it was one of three used for the movie, and it isn’t even...

The C8 Corvette Isn't As Good On Gas As The C7 Was: Report
The Corvette has always stood as a symbol of attainable American sports car values. It’s got a roaring V8, lots of bare-chested torque, and handling that can compete with the Yurpeens for a lot less green. And since the C5 generation at least, it’s been able to do that...

This British Supermarket Chain's Archive Is Filled With Great Car Pictures
Somewhere in London’s Docklands is an archive. It holds a lot of artifacts, documents, and images that tell the story of Sainsbury’s, a supermarket chain unknown to most of us but likely awful familiar to the Brits out there. But there’s more. There are cars. Well, pictures of them....

What's Your Gas Shortage Story?
What's Your Gas Shortage Story?
Back in the ‘70s, waiting for gas wasn’t an uncommon experience, from what I understand. I wasn’t around back then so I don’t know for sure, but many of the people I know who were alive back in the ‘70s knew the experience all too well. My grandparents have...

The First Generation 4Runner Was A Different, And In Some Ways Better 4Runner
There used to be lots of options for people who wanted an SUV with a removable top. The Ford Bronco, International Harvester Scout, Chevy Blazer, Dodge Ramcharger, and the Suzuki Samurai and Sidekick all had removable tops at one point. The options are much more limited these days thanks...
