Two Riders Killed In Crash During MotoAmerica Race At Laguna Seca-July 2024

Two riders lost their lives during a multiple-bike crash on the first lap of Sunday’s MotoAmerica Superbike/Superstock 1000 Race 2. Per , racers Bernat Martinez, 35, and Daniel Rivas Fernandez, 27, both of Spain, both died of injuries sustained in the wreck after being transported to local hospitals.

describes the on-track incident as a chain reaction that was set in motion when Daniel Rivas suddenly lost power after launching for the start on row 3 of the grid. Rivas put his left hand up to alert riders around him, but ultimately Rivas fell from his motorcycle at some point during the pile-up and was struck by another rider.

Racers Josh Chisum, Bernat Martinez, Devon McDonough and Kevin Pinkstaff were also transported to local hospitals from the incident.

According to MotoAmerica, Martinez was transported by ambulance to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula in Monterey, where he later died. Rivas was airlifted to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas, where he also died from his injuries.

No updates on Chisum, McDonough or Pinkstaff’s condition have been released.

“I really don’t have any words to describe what we all feel,” MotoAmerica president Wayne Rainey said today. “First and foremost, is the loss to the families and loved ones. Our sincere condolences goes out to each and every one of them as well as the MotoAmerica family. They are in our thoughts and prayers.”

Per Roadracing World, Martinez was a privateer from Alberic, Valencia, Spain, running a Blumaq-sponsored Yamaha YZF-R1 in the Superbike Championship. He was fifth in the championship and had qualified fifteenth in the combined Superbike/Superstock 1000 race at Laguna Seca. Rivas was a first-time competitor in the MotoAmerica series from Moana Galicia, Spain, running with Allende SBK BMW Racing. He had qualified eighth in the Laguna Seca race.
