2024-02-19 EST 22:11:53

Several dozen commercial trucks wait to cross the Pharr-Reynosa International bridge on April 13, 2022 in Pharr, Texas.

A new wave of migrants from looking to escape grave issues in their home countries are reportedly leading to logistical tangles for the automotive industry at .

At least 19,000 trucks hauling $1.9 billion in goods are currently , according to . Increased safety inspections are reportedly causing wait times to last as long as 24 hours, and lines are stretching for 14 miles.

To make matters even more complicated, officials in instituted their own cargo truck inspection – on top of federal inspection – to look for folks illegally crossing the border and drug smugglers. And it’s not just trucks.

Hundreds of thousands of people are moving to the U.S. border from South and Central Mexico, and many are attempting to ride on The situation has apparently led to temporary border crossing closures and forced Mexico’s largest railway operator, Ferromex, to suspend freight train service. Last month, paused cargo processing at the international bridge in in an effort to shift officers and resources to processing migrant arrivals.

All of these issues are having a big impact on several automotive companies. AutoNews says is the seventh-largest global passenger vehicle manufacturer, and it pumps out about 3 million vehicles per year, and three-fourths of those are sent to the U.S.

The impact is reportedly being felt at dealerships across the U.S. deliveries of the , , and – all built in Mexico – were interrupted in September because of the disruptions. The models collectively accounted for about a quarter of Nissan’s U.S. sales in the first nine months of this year. Right now, we don’t know just how many Nissan vehicles have been impacted by the issues at the border.

“There were issues with … immigrants getting on trains,” . “So they shut down rail service … [affecting] our vehicles coming back into the U.S.”

Nissan isn’t the only impacted automaker. – which builds pickups and EVs in Mexico is reportedly “experiencing slight delays in shipping across the border.” Stellantis – which builds and crossovers in Mexico is “closely monitoring the situation. It is working with transportation providers to “mitigate any delivery disruptions” to dealers.

Automakers aren’t alone, though. Suppliers are also being hit pretty hard. Butzel Long, an automotive supplier, is reportedly facing up to 12-hour delays moving parts into the U.S. from its factory in Piedras Negras, Mexico.

Now, automakers and suppliers are looking for alternatives. is reportedly transporting vehicles to the U.S. via sea “on a limited basis,” and so has Nissan.

Hear A Glorious 27-Liter Twin-Turbo V12 Tank Engine Start Up In A Ford Crown Victoria
When car enthusiasts think of engine swaps they probably think most about General Motor’s famed LS or even a Suzuki Hayabusa for smaller cars. But some enthusiasts want to do bigger, crazier swaps. One Swedish car enthusiast has mated a Ford Crown Victoria with a Rolls-Royce Meteor V12, an...

Retractable Hard-Top Convertibles Are A Doomed Fad
The onslaught of retractable hard-top convertibles over the last two decades basically died overnight, and since I don’t think many people cared enough to realize it, I also don’t think anybody is going to be upset over it. The writing has been on the wall for the retractable hard-top...

Blip: Ami Wrangling
See what’s happening here? This was a real problem in 1960s and 1970s France: little kids, coaxing innocent, unsuspecting Citroën Amis into private, enclosed yards, usually never to be seen again. To this day, nobody knows where these Amis are. ...

It's Time For Real Talk About Power Seat Controls
I’ll admit, I hadn’t given power seat controls much thought years ago. See, most of my miserable old cars have manual levers and pawls and ratchety things to scrape the seats into different positions. But, of course, many, many modern cars provide electric motors to do the work for...

Over 200 Fascists Quickly Retreat To Rental Trucks During Confrontation With Only 10 Philadelphians (Update)
If you fuck around in Philadelphia, you will quickly find out. That’s what a white supremacists group, trucked all the way from Texas to the nation’s birthplace on the eve of July 4, learned after their group of 200ish haters were quickly turned back by under a dozen Philadelphians. (...
