Vintage African Rally Footage Makes Everything Better
Vintage African Rally Footage Makes Everything Better-April 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:46

Some of the toughest rallies in the world aren't rally raid style competitions like the , or even in inclement weather, but rather, they're in Africa. Stage road too rough? These guys probably don't even want to hear it.

The East African Safari Rally, for example, was dropped from the World Rally Championship in 2003 for organizational reasons, yet it also had gained a reputation for being thoroughly brutal on cars. People still run it, though, because why not? Rally itself is one of the toughest tests of man and machine out there, and surviving the Safari Rally is the ultimate challenge.

So, let's enjoy this footage of cars like the Lancia Stratos and the Toyota Celica GT-Four in their natural habitat: the merciless, unforgiving wilderness of Africa. Watch them bottom out on sand dunes, come to a splashy, slow to a crawl on "roads" that consist of giant puddles of standing water, and fording bodies of water that come up past their door sills.

You know, as they should be.
