Watch Adam Savage Build This Hilariously Overkill Truck Bed Chair-Holder
Watch Adam Savage Build This Hilariously Overkill Truck Bed Chair-Holder-October 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:13:14

Adam Savage is one of my favorite lunatic engineers, so I was a little surprised when he took on a project as basic as putting an inflatable movie screen in the back of a pickup. But damn that is one seriously sweet chair-holding cargo box.

You probably remember Savage from Mythbusters, where he built smashed things and shot pumpkins out of a cannon with that time-traveling bar tender Jamie Hyneman. On his new show , Savage and his crew basically run with the same themes of creative engineering and destruction.

I guess he’s helping Honda hawk the new pickup too, but this project and video are interesting enough that I figured it merited a story.

What you need is the SawZall, Savage. And some really big tires. But there’s probably a line prohibiting that in Honda’s rental agreement.

The Ridgeline’s onboard inverter and bed-mounted power outlet is apparently strong enough to run the air pump inflating the movie screen, but I noticed there’s no mention of where the projector itself is getting electricity.

Honda the truck’s inverter spits out 115 volts/400 watts, which should be enough to operate some home theatre projectors. You might need to have the truck running for the battery to survive that kind of usage for the length of a movie though, and sitting around the exhaust pipe all that time might make you a little woozy.

Anyway Savage’s custom mounting system for this blow-up movie screen is actually pretty awesome. Tidy design, easy operation. And here I can barely make a shoe rack from Target stand straight. I’m not even trying to mess with IKEA.

It’s cool to see somebody messing around with truck modifications besides lift kits and big tires. That said, if you ever camp next to me with a giant-ass inflatable TV, I will fashion an atlatl from sticks and pop that shit.

The Mint 400 is a little over a month away, and the organizers have been kind enough to throw together this epic promo to get you psyched. Remember when Johnny Depp stumbled around the Mint as Hunter S. Thompson In Fear & Loathing? I can't promise our coverage will be...

Chevy Silverado Reaper Might Have The Balls To Excuse Its Looks
I finally saw the beyond the confines of a Photoshop-scape yesterday at the Chicago Auto Show, and learned a few things about it that might make you reconsider writing it off over that wacky face. To answer your first question, yes, the name and graphic is an intentional troll on...

2015 Silverado & Sierra 2500 HD 4WD Crew Cab: The Truck Yeah! Review
GM was officially first to launch a 2015 heavy duty pickup, and it doesn't suck. The redesigned 2015 GMC Sierra 2500 and 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 are not without fault, but they offer a significantly better towing experience than what the rest of the segment can offer. For now. The...

Chevy City Express Is The Coolest Cargo Carrier At Chicago Auto Show
The rest of the Jalopnik crew made fun of me for going gaga over the van's cargo management features. Whatever, I say OEM cargo shelves are kickass and I don't care who knows it. I also love the flat surface attached to the back of the passenger seat. The seat...

Ram's Retort To GM's Towing Comparison Between The Big Three
It's an exciting time to be talking about trucks— every automaker is bending the throttle on innovation in the utility segment and it's all-out war to be king of every comparison. GM impressed me with their intelligent cruise control, but Ram's Nick Cappa wanted to address some things I might...

'The Smoking Tire' Worships The Range Rover LWB... With A Music Video
Matt Farah is unabashedly in love with the new Range Rover. Hard to blame him, they're a treat to ride in regardless of how hard they are to own. This video has some great dust-throwing against a beautiful desert backdrop, plus a bonus at the end that's a little... different....
