Weekend Motorsports Roundup, August 30-31, 2014-August 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:50

Welcome to the Jalopnik Weekend Motorsports Roundup, where we let you know what's going on in the world of racing, where you can see it, and where you can talk about it all in one convenient place. Where else would you want to spend your weekend?

We don't talk a lot about firm, deep-seated beliefs very often here at Jalopnik. Sure, there are the universally held ones, both old and new. The answer is always . The was the greatest hot hatch of the 1980s.

One member of the Japanese Nostalgic Car board put it best. "Those cars don't even look real they…

But I have one that is much more personal than that, and I don't believe that many others share it.

That's because I believe, without a shadow of a doubt, that the Camping World Truck Series race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park is the most overlooked and underrated race on the entire NASCAR circuit.

At least if we base it all on

NASCAR is supposed to be a "manly" sport (whatever that means), and the Truck racing even manlier,…

Ty Dillon and Chase Elliott had an absolutely epic battle, with Elliott eventually destroying Dillon's race when he put him into the tire barrier on the very last corner of the very last lap.

That's a harsh move, and if anyone deserved to get slapped because of it, it was Elliott, by Dillon. But Elliott did not get slapped, not by Dillon. Or by anyone at all, really, because the Truck Series is better than that.

No, Max Papis got slapped, instead. Max Fucking Papis.

That's because Papis basically tried to do his best Chase Elliott impression on Mike Skeen shortly after, throwing Skeen into the wall.

And that slap was hilarious.

Okay, so maybe it wasn't the most exemplary moment in all of racing history. Maybe it wasn't the Mille Miglia, or the inaugural running of the Indy 500. Drivers aren't usually proud of ruining someone else's race, and there are unwritten rules, and blah blah blah.

You know what, though? I don't really care. I don't really care who won the race or who didn't win the race, or who put who in the wall. It's in the past, and I'm not one to hold a grudge like that because a) I'm not actually racing in the Truck Series, contrary to popular belief and b) I bet Chase Elliott is probably a really nice guy. He seems like a nice guy.

But I did get to see some really incredible racing around a road course, some trucks with too much power and too little grip, great driver battles, and oh yeah, Max Papis got slapped. By another driver's girlfriend. And then he gave the most epic European sneer of all European sneers.

Like another knight just slapped him with a glove, and now a duel to the death is the only way out.

And let me just remind you, this was at a truck race. A NASCAR truck race. You don't get that kind of thing at, say, a Formula One race. Though if Nicole Scherzinger managed to slap Romain Grosjean, followed by the most dignified evil eye this side of Sauron, I might be able to die happy.

Anyways, what I'm saying is, the NASCAR truck race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park is this weekend. Oh, and there's IndyCars at Fontana, too.
