The Age of the Electric Crossover is here. This is by no means a bad thing, , but it’s certainly a new era for the automobile — something different. But what does that mean for a brand that was built on different? It means the Subaru Solterra.

The Solterra is built in cooperation with Toyota, which means it’s the Toyobaru twin of the . Our own Elizabeth Blackstock recently , but like the GR86 and the BRZ, there may be more than a few differences hiding beneath those shared body panels.

Not every panel is shared, though. Personally, I prefer the Solterra’s design over that of the bZ4X — though the Toyota’s grille-less front end does get it some points. As a whole, while it still has the general Aero Egg shape used by many modern crossovers, the details make the Subaru stand out from the crowd. Whether that’s for better or for worse is up to you.

Also, while the bZ4X name , “Solterra” is an actual word. That’s a match point for Subaru.

Whether or not those odd looks hold up, however, is something I plan to learn firsthand. Subaru made its mark in the automotive world by , and you could argue that .

As the years have gone on, , but it’s come at the . In an electrified world where is no longer a , what does the Subaru value proposition become? , why should buyers pick the Subaru (and its ) over the Toyota? Over any competitor?

That’s my big question, at least. What are yours? Let me know in the comments, and I’ll keep an eye out for answers while I’m behind the wheel.

How Do You Feel About This Bronco With A Super Duty Face, That Looks Like A Photoshop But Actually Exists?
“Oh great,” I muttered to myself, browsing Twitter. “Somebody stretched the face of a Super Duty over a classic Bronco in Photoshop and posted it for instant virality and indigestion.” You see enough works of fiction like this and you really of the culture around car renders. The “what...

At $11,000, Does This Custom V8-Powered 1970 MGB-GT Have Enough Flair For You?
The wide-body on today’s MGB-GT hides a whole ‘lotta Mustang underneath. That includes a 5.0 and an AOD which should make the car PDQ. Could all that add up to what the seller is asking? Conversion vans may be a thing for some, but yesterday’s wasn’t the thing for...

The 2022 Honda Passport TrailSport Is The Germ Of An Idea
The Honda Passport is a mid-size SUV, but not one that is the first to come to mind when you think about going off-road. The 2022 Honda Passport TrailSport is trying to change that. ( I had a brain fart and originally called the Passport full-size, but it is mid-size,...

Now That's Some Good Patina
Now That's Some Good Patina
It seems these days everyone is worried about their collector cars having as few miles as possible on the odometer. They want to hold things as objets d’art, rather than their intended purpose as machine to move humans around on roads. I reject the notion that enthusiasts should preserve...

At $2,900, Will This 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible Cruise To An Easy Win?
It’s true that PT Cruisers like today’s candidate have long been polarizing cars. Let’s find out which Cruise crowd you belong to and whether this low-mileage convertible’s price is equally polarizing. I don’t know whether you actually watched the walk-around video of last Friday’s or simply fired up the...
