As Jalopnik’s resident car-buying expert and a professional car shopper, I get emails. Lots of emails. I’ve picked a few of your questions and will try to help out. This week we are discussing factory rebates for cars that are impossible to find and avoiding a flooded car.

“Reaching out to ask why would Audi run new car purchase incentives with Costco in August and September yet not have any to buy? I want to buy a new S4. I figured with the Costco incentive plus their pricing, and with an Audi loyalty bonus a good deal might be had but no new cars are available. Plus, the closest dealer [to] Seattle aligned with Costco pricing is in Idaho so visiting a dealer to seeing the Costco special pricing is a bit difficult.”

Keep in mind that these Costco/rebate programs often apply to multiple models, not just a specific car like the S4. So while the car you want may not be found on the ground there are probably a number of more common cars like a standard A4 that can be had using these rebate programs.

Typically, with Audi’s Costco discounts the dealer doesn’t have to be affiliated with the Costco car buying program, it works as a factory rebate for Costco members. My experience has been that most Audi dealers will apply the Costco rebates. Also if you can’t find your S4 in the region, it may be worth casting a net nationwide. Even with shipping, the deal may be favorable, and you will have access to a lot more inventory.

Next up, should buyers be concerned about flooded cars in the NYC market?

“We are in the NYC market and are trying to buy a moderately priced used car around $15,000 but are concerned that a dealer will try to sell us something with flood damage. What’s the best way not to get screwed after the storm?”

Most reputable dealers will not sell you a flood-damaged car. The risk is just too great for them, of course, the key is finding a reputable dealer and that is a challenge in the NYC metro. I’ve mentioned before that often when it comes to used cars shopping the dealer is almost as important as shopping the car. Read reviews, and do some research on the dealership, often you will figure out quickly what stores are legit and which stores are slimy. I strongly recommend an independent pre-purchase inspection, but that can be difficult when cars get sold so fast. You may want to take advantage of retailers like Carvana, Vroom, and Carmax who offer return policies if you buy a car and find something that is problematic.

$19.8 Million Sale Proves We Should All Go Back In Time And Buy A Warehouse Full Of McLaren F1s
There are certain cars whose values have shot up so much that we should all kick ourselves for not having filled warehouses with them decades ago. Air-cooled Porsche 911s and s come to mind, though one of the kings of collector-car appreciation has to be the McLaren F1, one...

At $195,000, Could This 2015 Panther WaterCar Be Fun If By Land And Two Times As Much If By Sea?
With the threat of global climate change supposedly looming, there’s a strong possibility that many of our favorite coastal roads will eventually be under water. With today’s Panther Amphibious Car that won’t be a problem. Let’s see if its price will be. Colin Chapman is famous for his efforts...

The Lada Niva Refuses To Die, 42 Years And Counting
If there was even a shred of hope for my objectivity, it was gone as soon as I climbed inside the 2019 Lada Niva, slammed its startlingly thin door shut, and felt the 84 horsepower engine rumble to life. Releasing the clutch, I heard the familiar ghost-like howl of the...

Why Buy A Bugatti Centodieci When You Can Have This F-16 Fighter Jet For Less?
The $8,878,800 (plus tax!) list price of the really makes you think. The fact that there’s a market for such a preposterous toy is a pretty clear indicator that some people are too rich. Then again–why would you park among peasants in one of these when I could hook...

Reminder: You Can Still Get Awesome Deals On A Kia Stinger
The is probably the coolest car to come from the Korean brand. Rear- or all-wheel drive, sharp looks and driving dynamics on par with much more expensive German stuff make it a compelling proposition. Even better is the fact that to move units before the summer ends. According to...

The 2019 Jaguar F-Type V6 May Be Old But It Still Rips
The 2019 pretty much looks like the 2013 Jaguar F-Type; it’s old news. Then again, so are Converse sneakers and Coca-Cola. The F-Type is not the freshest or most technologically impressive modern car but I’ll be damned it doesn’t hit the spot every single time. (: Jaguar loaned me...
