Allow me to tell you a tale.

Once upon a time, there was a practical economy hatchback. It was built by a company once known for performance, but that had lost its way over the years and wanted to recapture its youthful vigor. The company gave that hatchback an upgraded suspension, a powerful engine, a rally-inspired body, and a performance badge that called back to the brand’s racing efforts.

But that car never came to the United States. American enthusiasts begged and pleaded, but were shunned for years. Until one day, the company made an announcement: A similar, albeit slightly tweaked, car would come to our shores. Perfect, right?

At its launch, the car was a hit. Dealer markups were absurd, and they still flew off the lot like their wings were tuned for lift rather than downforce. In its first few months, it sold thousands of units, and the manufacturer stood as an example of how bringing cars to enthusiasts could be a viable business strategy.

That car was the Focus RS. Its third model year in the U.S. was its last.

In fact, all of these cars are now dead in the U.S.

I’ll admit, the RS isn’t a perfect comparison to the GR Corolla. The Focus was , and never quite shook the reputation for unreliability that those brought. But it served as a shining example of a truth automotive marketers have known forever: Enthusiasts, while loud, are few in number.

We all begged Toyota for the GR Yaris, and now the company has given us our own version. Will it follow in the footsteps of the RS, a star that for such a brief window of time? Or will it turn out more like the Civic Type R, with enough sales to justify a second generation? What do you think?

For $1,995, Could You Fall For This Luxurious 1988 Lincoln Mk VII LSC?
If you wanted to take one lap of luxury then you could do far worse than to do so in today’s Mk VII. We’ll have to decide if you should also be lapping up its price. In the movie Bridesmaids, Melissa McCarthy’s character “overcommits” by adopting nine party-gift puppies rather...

The 2018 Mini Countryman Plug-In Makes A Case For Short Range Hybrids
The has a long name and a smaller battery than almost any other plug-in hybrid in existence. But even though it’s a small step toward electric driving, it’s got a lot of personality for a car you connect to a wall socket. Being a Midwest boy, the pure joy of...

The seller of today’s T4 Doka says it’s literally sitting at the dock with two of its smaller “Sinka” brothers. Let’s find out if its price might make it a worthy port ‘o call. There’s this old Doris Day movie entitled . Although I’ve never actually seen the 1968 flick,...

For $10,000, Could This 1977 MGB V8 Conversion Convert You Into A British Believer?
Today’s MGB rocks a soft top and a saucy Rover V8. Let’s see if its price tag is low enough that you’d let that Rover take over. You know, back when Saturn—the GM car division, not the planet—was a thing, one of their key differentiators from other auto makers was...
