The new R1 underwent a radical transformation for 2015, but Yamaha couldn’t leave well enough alone. That meant creating something special – the track-focused R1 M – and rather than keeping all its trick tech shrouded in metal and plastic, one OCD nutter inside the company sliced it in half to show what makes it so damn impressive.

It look over a month and a half for Yamaha’s in-house surgeon to slice, dice, polish, and recreate the bisected R1 M before it debuted today at Laguna. And you can see it all. From the engine internals to the IMU and all the associated hardware that makes it the superbike special that Valentino Rossi had a hand in developing. and reveal in the details below.
