Yamaha's New YXZ1000R Sport Side-By-Side Is The Thing Dreams Are Made Of
Yamaha's New YXZ1000R Sport Side-By-Side Is The Thing Dreams Are Made Of-September 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:14:19

Yamaha’s newest SxS, the YXZ1000R, is not for everyone. It’s not for the faint of heart. Not for the timid. Not for the weak. It is for those of you (us) who want to go really fast, really far, and who want to jump not just some things, but all of the things.

When I wrote about my plans for the new Lanesplitter, I claimed that all things powersports would be included and, by golly, I’m making good on that promise. In part, because I said I would - but mostly because after being driven (that’s right, they wouldn’t even let me drive one), all I can think about is taking one to Glamis. Want to know why you should care about this thing? Here’s a list:

Its all-new 998 cc, triple cylinder motor (which we’re told makes 110 hp or so) has plenty of low and mid range torque, but also a fairly high 10,500 rpm redline. The YXZ1000R is the first SxS to have a fully manual, 5-speed sequential shift transmission - and it’s mated to a direct drive transmission. No paddles, no slushbox, and no more belts. It’s also more efficient, providing 15-20% more power to the rear wheels. 2WD, 4WD, and 4WD with full locking differential mode mean you can drift or crawl your way around or over just about anything. The clean air intake is mounted centrally and high so that it gets a maximum amount of clean air - which is filtered through a dual element air filter which allows for longer maintenance intervals and is easy to clean out in the field. The goes on sale next month in the 60th Anniversary Special Edition yellow for $21,599, followed this December by the Blaze Orange colorway for $19,799 and Racing Blue/White for $19,999.

Unfortunately, the launch yesterday in San Pedro, Calif., was shared with dealers from all over the country - which meant there were way too many people and not nearly enough trust in the group to go around.

Guess this just means we’ll have to get a loaner and take it to the trails and dunes for ourselves. Just another day at the office, all for you, my beloved readers.

Florida Pedestrian Bridge Collapse The Result Of Bad Math And Ignoring Giant Cracks: Feds
Florida Pedestrian Bridge Collapse The Result Of Bad Math And Ignoring Giant Cracks: Feds
On March 15, 2018, a pedestrian bridge at Florida International University collapsed, crushed the cars underneath, killing six people and injuring 10 others. The tragedy was the result of a litany of errors by the contractors designing the bridge, an independent reviewer supposed to catch those errors, and the...

Let Me Ride The Hasty Flaming Buffalo
Let Me Ride The Hasty Flaming Buffalo
It is rare that a custom motorcycle tickles my fancy quite like the “Hasty Flaming Buffalo” here has. I am an absolute sucker for simplicity, motorsport inspiration, and old school cues. And this bike from LM Creations has all of that and absolutely nothing else. It is ostensibly a...

I Told My Friend Not To Buy A Broken Daewoo Van 1,800 Miles Away. He Didn't Listen
From across a table crowded with wine bottles, my friend, , announces that he’s flying to the middle of nowhere in less than twelve hours. That is, to a part of Russia bordering Kazakhstan—nearly 1,800 miles from the Saint Petersburg kitchen in which we’re drinking—where he’s “going to buy a...

Yellow Lights Need To Be Longer
Yellow Lights Need To Be Longer
If you’ve ever felt yellow lights aren’t long enough, you aren’t alone. The length of the light varies from place to place and it’s sometimes confusing for drivers driving somewhere new who are used to a certain duration at home. A Swedish engineer named is fighting the good fight...

Holy Shit, Yamaha Still Makes The TW200
Holy Shit, Yamaha Still Makes The TW200
We are a nostalgic culture. We like to look back and think about how good things used to be, to watch old movies and pretend like they aren’t really terrible. Auto companies know this, and that’s why they sell us the throwback designs. The look and feel of the...

Don’t Be Nice Around Motorcycles; Be Predictable
Don’t Be Nice Around Motorcycles; Be Predictable
People will often tell you to ride your motorcycle like you’re invisible. This is pretty good advice because most people don’t see you. Many of them don’t see anything except the cell phone glued to their face and whatever their peripheral vision happens to catch. A lot of people...
