Yes, Your Lifted Pickup Truck Still Needs Winter Tires
Yes, Your Lifted Pickup Truck Still Needs Winter Tires-June 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:12:11

Pickup trucks in the U.S. are marketed as all-capable, all-terrain, unstoppable forces of adventure. Lifting a pickup is supposed to give even more ground clearance, so that no boulder or mud bog can disrupt your journey. Surely, then, a lifted pickup can handle a bit of snow on a mild incline. Right?

According to from Twitter user troylf, not so much. The clip shows a lifted Chevy Silverado, seemingly a 2016-2018 Silverado 1500, struggling to crab-walk up a snowy hill. The truck has no issues clearing the height of the snow, but its low-profile tires can’t seem to get a grip.

Now, in the truck’s defense, this video was filmed during a . Lexington, KY, where the video was shot, received in one day. This particular road, however, appears to have been spared the worst of the precipitation — there certainly aren’t ten inches of snow under this truck’s comically heightened bumpers.

The Silverado is clearly only sending power to its rear wheels for the duration of its ill-fated hillclimb attempt. Chevrolet does offer the 1500 in RWD-only spec, and Lexington is far enough south that one could easily believe this particular example is so equipped. A , however, shows that just three percent of new Silverados available within 100 miles of the city are RWD. While it’s certainly possible this truck can’t engage its front wheels, it seems more likely that the driver simply neglected to.

Who can say where the road goes

Even without four-wheel-drive, a may have helped this novelty oversized vehicle make its way home. Winter weather comes with winter temperatures, and that cold air and pavement will of summer or all-season rubber. The moral of the story? Don’t rely on the size of your truck to carry you through the winter. No amount of ground clearance will make up for a poor choice in tires.

Of all the rear-engined Fiats, I think the 850 Sport might be the prettiest. Never common here in America, I think I’ve only seen one in person around three or so times, but I’m pretty smitten every time. Plus, I like how citrusy this ad is. So orange and...

What Do You Want To Know About The 2021 Acura TLX Type S?
A twin-turbo V6, all-wheel drive, strong aesthetic value and a good mid-level luxury interior are the defining points of Acura’s new flagship sedan. A good 355 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque shove this four-door forward, and give it a comparable set of specs to Audi’s S4, BMW’s M340i,...

Let's Figure Out What The Car In Netflix' Popular The Mitchells vs. The Machines Was Based On
At the moment I write this, the most popular movie on Netflix isn’t some grim true-crime documentary about two families that murder each other over and over, but refreshingly, is a charming animated movie about a relatable and flawed family doing their clumsy best to thwart a brutal global...

The Ford Explorer Timberline Is Ford's Latest Off-Road Play Thing
Ford has so many off-road signaling trims now — Ranger Tremor, F-150 Tremor, Super Duty Tremor, Bronco, Bronco Sport, F-150 Raptor — that I’m beginning to lose track. But here is another one: the Ford Explorer Timberline. As with most new trims, Explorer Timberline can come in a new...

GM Just Made $3 Billion
I can’t say that all of its first-quarter profits are down to selling an incredibly charming EV the size of a shoebox, but it’s hard to ignore. All that and more in for May 5, 2021. The global pandemic is far from over, but GM is certainly back to...
