You Bought The Wrong Toyota 4Runner-January 2024

I bought a Toyota 4Runner recently. I haven’t written about it yet because it’s hardly the most exciting thing in the world, but so far I like it a lot. It’s a 2002, a Limited, it has some really great equipment and drives like a nearly new car at 200,000 miles. (This is what happens .)

Thing is, I fucked up. I bought the wrong 4Runner. So did you. We all did. We all bought the wrong 4Runner.

The 4Runner I (we) should have bought is . I’m sure it will go for some obscene amount of money because that is how that site works, but I still believe buying this may be the finest decision a person can make.

The 4Runner is being sold out of Marion, Mass. The listing says this 4x4 example was refurbished by its previous owner, including with a new light blue paint coat and a number of new parts for its 3.0-liter V6 engine. It comes with the hard top, two soft tops and all recent service records.

“The seller notes scratches, chips, and overspray as well as mismatched body panels,” the site says. Who cares? It’s a 4Runner, not some garage queen Porsche. You have to deal with a four-speed automatic, which isn’t great, but if I can live with that every day so can you.

The truck—and this is a truck, the way they used to make ‘em—is listed at 194,000 miles and clearly has tons of life left. It’s fairly rare to find first-generation 4Runners in such amazing shape, and you know this thing is tough enough to handle just about everything that can be thrown at it.

. And don’t buy any other 4Runner. Buy this one.

At $31,500, Would You Dip Your Toes Into The Three Rows of This 2013 Mercedes Benz GL350 Designo Bluetec?
The full name of today’s GL350 includes a couple of surnames—Benz and Diesel—and a couple of made up words—Bluetec and Designo. Let’s see if all together they make up a car worth it’s asking. It’s not the cough that carries you off, it’s the coffin they carry you off in....

Here's a Bus With a Built-In 1972 Honda Z600 Escape Pod
Found is a 1981 Eagle bus that’s been turned into an RV, and that houses a chopped-up 1972 Honda Z600 Kei Car. It’s the ultimate Japanese Kei Car escape pod for when your bus breaks down or is attacked by zombies. The listing has ended, but my heart still yearns...

Here Is Why Some Dealerships Aren’t Actually Interested in Selling You a Car
You would think this whole “” thing would be easy for dealers, especially if an interested customer comes in with a serious intent to buy. But you would be surprised how uninterested some stores are in selling certain cars to certain buyers. If someone is looking for your run of...

Why Won't Dealers Negotiate On Pre-Owned Cars?
As Jalopnik’s resident car buying expert and professional car shopper, I get emails. Lots of emails. I’ve decided to pick a few questions and try to help out. This week we will discuss dealers not negotiating on used cars, paying for a private purchase from far away, and the disappearance...

Would You Drop $20,000 to Play Let’s Pretend in This 2004 VW Phaeton W12?
Once upon a time, VW imagined they were Mercedes Benz and built cars like today’s Phaeton W12. It’s a luxurious reminder of the company’s delusions of grandeur, but can it still bring the big bucks? A unique interior, oddly angled V6 turbo diesel engine, and a three-pointed star in the...

I'm Getting Too Old For My Hot Hatchback! What Car Should I Buy?
Evan is pushing 30, and his MazdaSpeed3 is just a little too loud and brash. He wants something fast with a bit of practicality, but it can’t scream “I have my traffic lawyer on speed dial.” At this stage of his life, he needs to look somewhat professional. What car...
