You Can Own Part Of F1's Ugliest Moment-July 2024

For reasons perhaps beyond anyone’s understanding, F1 . They were universally loathed, and quickly banned, and now you can own one.

I am somewhat fascinated with the 2014 F1 cars, a real beacon of how the people in charge of F1's rules try to regulate a certain kind of racing, and teams end up producing something else. F1 has wanted cheaper racing. Costs stay astronomical. F1 wants more overtaking. Short of DRS-assisted passes, races still look like processions. Every time that the rules dictate one thing, the teams figure out a way around it.

And so we had the 2014 cars, which were meant to, I don’t know, do something. Something that didn’t entail cars having Groucho Marx noses on them.

The ugliest of them all was probably the Caterham team, but I myself was a fan of the Lotus cars, which ran one short prong and one long one, to meet the letter of the rules if not the spirit.

spotted this “twin tusk” nose cone for sale, with bidding at £900.00. The explains why exactly these Lotus noses looked as they did:

In order to meet the single lower nose tip regulation, the two tusks are of unequal length, so the longer one forms the mandatory nose tip, while the other is short enough to avoid being considered part of the nose tip by the regulations.

This leaves each tusk to act as a crash structure, the front wing mounting pylon and then, as they narrow towards the rear of the car, also become turning vanes.

Of course a person does not need a 2014 Lotus F1 nose cone, but F1 didn’t really need it either.

Jalopnik Reviews: 2007 Mercury Mountaineer, Part 1
Can someone please tell me why Mercury exists, other than for Wert to pine over Jill Wagner? Of course, badge engineering is alive and well outside of the blue oval — just look at the Chrysler Aspen/Dodge Durango, any GMC truck, or the Nissan Armada/Infiniti QX56 — but Mercury doesn't...

This is almost Jalopnik Reviews: Mercury Part 2: Attack of the Clones. Okay, this time it's a GMC Yukon Denali, clone to the Chevrolet Tahoe and Cadillac Escalade. Lest you think this is a Tahoe with a badge slapped on it instead of the "professional grade" product you've come to...

Jalopnik Reviews: 2006 Audi A6 4.2 Quattro, Part 3
It's one of the most stylish, fast, and comfortable cars available on the market. And it's got more technology in it than the Space Shuttle. The A6 isn't nearly as fun to drive as the performance number or price tag would suggest. Also, for anybody that can't afford a $65,000...

Jalopnik Reviews: 2007 Mercury Mountaineer, Part 3
You're an SUV-driving parent who wants to buy American, but still wants to be different from the 10 other Ford drivers in your subdivision. Or, you're a man who drives a Jeep Liberty, but looking for something slightly less feminine. You enjoy driving, but don't tow, drive off-road, or use...

Jalopnik Reviews: 2007 GMC Yukon Denali, Part 2
Two out of three ain't bad, but Denali fails where the Tahoe and Escalade succeed. It's just plain funny-looking up front. As for the clear lenses over the tail lamps: Just because a design element shows up on the Lexus RX doesn't mean it's a good idea. Unfortunately this trend...

Jalopnik Reviews: 2007 Mercury Mountaineer, Part 2
Sure, it's easy to pick on the Mountaineer, but that doesn't change the fact that it's not very pretty. The waterfall grille is kind of sharp, in a blue whale baleen plate kind of way. Otherwise the Mountaineer is identical to the Ford Explorer, which is a generically pleasant SUV....
