You may have already read that the Williams FW43B Formula 1 car leaked on Friday, which prefaced my chance to of this year’s F1 season as far as are concerned. You might not, however, have noted that the breach happened even as one of Williams’ sponsors happens to be none other than , a cybersecurity firm .

Williams released a following the hack in which it detailed that the FW43B reveal was to have come from a virtual reality app. That app has since been pulled from app stores. From Williams:

Williams Racing planned to reveal its 2021 challenger, the FW43B, via an augmented reality app later today (5th March). However, sadly, because the app was hacked prior to launch, this will no longer be possible. We have subsequently removed the app from both the Apple App Store and Android Google Play store.

The hack seems to amount to the renders from the VR app, whose cybersecurity was, shall we say, lacking. The app gave users early and unrestricted access to the renders of the FW43B and its new livery, even down to of the machine!

The timing here is unfortunate, as Williams’ of an extension to the Acronis sponsorship talked up the successes of the partnership in gushing terms.

That from Williams quoted Serguei Beloussov, the CEO of Acronis, who stressed the importance of keeping Williams’ data safe:

“We are proud to support one of the most iconic Formula One teams on the grid. With our technology, we’re ensuring the safety, accessibility, privacy, authenticity, and security (SAPAS) of Williams Racing’s workloads, data, applications, and systems. By using this design methodology, we can deliver the highest calibre of cyber protection, keeping the team’s data tamper-free and easily accessible for smooth day-to-day operations. We are committed to working with Williams Racing as they protect their edge with Acronis.”

I can’t help but chuckle at the irony of the situation. It’s definitely a Curb Your Enthusiasm moment. It’s as if Pirelli stopped shipping tires to the racetrack and instead had sent a truckload of and then shrugged its shoulders.

Or as if (ex-sponsor) had sent along some Capri Sun juice pouches instead of bottles of vermouth. Or, if had sent Earl Grey instead of coffee.

A spokesperson for cybersecurity company, Acronis, provided the following statement in reference to the security breach:

The compromise of the AR app, which prevented Williams using it to launch the FW43B livery, was completely outside of Williams Racing’s in-house systems and networks which are protected by Acronis.

The spokesperson further elaborated that none of Williams’ systems were affected in the breach.

The Daytona 500 Just Won't Stop Wrecking
The Daytona 500 Just Won't Stop Wrecking
After a string of two crashes, the Daytona 500 has done it again with 59 laps to go. Jamie McMurray is involved once again, turning the car of Chase Elliott into Michael McDowell, causing a gigantic pile-up on Daytona International Speedway. Even the commentators have started calling it a wreckfest....

Watch A High-Speed Mistake At The Daytona 500 Nearly Take Out Clint Bowyer's Rear End
Close call? Close call. Either way, the first caution at the surprisingly clean (so far) Daytona 500 came out after a pretty simple mistake that could have ended much, much worse. Corey LaJoie whacked the outside wall on lap 27 after trying to carry too much speed into pit lane....

The Crash Fest At Daytona Has Officially Begun
After more than a stage and a half of racing in the Daytona 500—that’s 105 laps in new-NASCAR talk—a tire went down on Kyle Busch’s car and spun the No. 18 around, collecting bunch of cars and tearing them up. Afterward, Busch blamed and served a major burn to NASCAR’s...

Kurt Busch Wins 2017 Daytona 500 And Proceeds To Destroy The Infield Grass
Leading a single-file line of Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race cars across the finish line after a wild amount of lead changes in the final laps, Kurt Busch won the 2017 Daytona 500 for Stewart-Haas Racing. He then proceeded to do a celebratory burnout across the infield grass, tearing...

Stage Breaks In NASCAR Make Me Feel Robbed Of Racing
Stage Breaks In NASCAR Make Me Feel Robbed Of Racing
After the first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series stage break of 2017, I just feel robbed. The first stage of today’s Daytona 500 ended on lap 60, and the second stage went green on lap 68. The caution break between stages eats up laps that count towards the race distance,...

Final Stage Of The Daytona 500 Starts With A Massive 16-Car Crash, Plus Another Crash
Here’s what happens when NASCAR’s Cup Series tries to go four-wide at Daytona where there’s only space for three cars abreast: one huge crash. Jamie McMurray got a good run coming out of Turn 2 in the No. 1 car, going for the gap above Jimmie Johnson’s No. 48 car....
