Abandon All Hope, Here Is How NASCAR Is Chopping Up The Daytona 500 Into 'Stages'
Abandon All Hope, Here Is How NASCAR Is Chopping Up The Daytona 500 Into 'Stages'-March 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:25

Like an impending dentist appointment on the calendar, I’ve been trying to forget about NASCAR’s to its race day format. If I don’t think about it, maybe it will go away! But no, it’s become all too real now: NASCAR has announced how they’re chopping the Daytona 500 into three “stages.”

Per :

The stage breakdown for the Daytona 500 is 60-60-80. The first and second stages for the Daytona 500 will consist of 60 laps. The final stage to determine the winner of the 59th annual “Great American Race” will be 80 laps.

I don’t think we can call it a “Great American Race” if it’s technically three heats within a race. “Sort Of Nice But Way Too Short American Third,” maybe? “Ugh, Whatever, You’re Actually Doing This Chunk Of Daytona?” What about “Life Is Pointless And Love Is Over Daytona-lette?”

The top 10 drivers, , will receive points for finishing in the top 10 of each artificially-paused third of what used to be and still sort of is the Daytona 500. The Can-Am Duel races preceding Daytona will also award points this year—which, along with yesterday’s announcement of a for the Cup series—is one of the few welcome changes.

But the rest of it? Hope is dead. The Daytona 500, no longer a grueling, lengthy test of superspeedway endurance, lies tattered in sad pieces.

Are you happy now? Because I’m going to need someone to clean up this flipped-over desk and I’m in no mood to do so because you chopped the Daytona 500 into friggin’ thirds.

What Was The Best Rainy Race Of All Time?
What Was The Best Rainy Race Of All Time?
Something magical happens when a racing surface gets wet. True talent distinguishes itself from the masses of the mediocre, as the less impressive drivers just entirely forget how to drive. Strategy both flies out the window and becomes the most important thing in the world. Records are set. Legends...

Here's The Earliest Possible Race Where An F1 Driver Can Win The World Championship
How early in the year can a Formula One driver secure enough points to be crowned World Champion? It’s a question I’ve always wanted to know but was just far too lazy to find the answer to (math? No thanks!). But now, thankfully, my itch of curiosity has been...

Photo Proof The Roval Is Good
One of the most exciting things in NASCAR only happens a few times a year, and that is, of course, when the sanctioning body takes its race cars to road courses. It not only reminds the world that NASCAR does sometimes turn right, but also that if there are...

I Can Only Hope To Be As Calm As Brendan Gaughan After Flipping A 200-MPH Race Car
Toward the end of the race at on Monday, which was delayed from Sunday due to rain and a lack of lights at the track, there was a giant wreck. That’s the norm. Less normal is the tendency for a car to do a full-on flip, since NASCAR to keep...
