The dream of the is alive and well for whoever ends up buying this Zimmer Golden Spirit Coupe listed on . Well, either the dream is alive or the nightmare depending on who you ask, because this turned is either great or awful.

It can’t be both, I don’t think. I’m leaning toward awful, not only because of its looks. But because this Mustang/Golden Spirit doesn’t get inthespirit enough. If I’m going to buy an ungodly modification of a , it’s got to be fully-committed to the bit. It has to be meticulous down to the last detail.

Mechanically, it’s not the worst. There’s a 5.0-liter Coyote V8 under the hood, and even though it has a six-speed automatic transmission, it comes with a limited slip differential. That extra traction will be helpful around corners.

I’m more concerned with the fussy little things that break the illusion of the classic looks. I know it’s just in the nature of designs from and , but some of it is too blatant: the mismatched wire wheels for spares; a trunk bump that doesn’t house a spare tire; the simulated exhaust pipes; the extra “t” in Gatsby.

After seeing those things, it’s hard to suspend my disbelief, and all I see is how mismatched the Zimmer looks from the A-pillar forward and the C-pillar back. It’s like three cars trying to occupy the same space.

The door lines, or creases, end in a semi-rhombus towards the back that disrupts the wheel arch. The wheelbase is absurdly long. And the slope of the roofline just seems off.

There’s a reason most are convertibles. You have to match the slope lines! Or , dammit. The roof of that 2011 Ford Mustang (hardly) hiding beneath Zimmer’s coachwork is too sleek for the rest of the Golden Spirit’s lines.

Again, I’m not sure where I stand on it because I love that someone was passionate enough to make something this ugly and still love it, but I’m confused by this mosaic of metal and fiberglass. Of course, I’m less confused by the current bid, at $9,999, which makes this Mustang GT-based Zimmer actually look like a bargain considering some of the on BaT lately.

Blip: I Feel Like Maybe We Don't Talk About These Enough
I just want to use today’s Blip to remind you that there’s a modern French that currently exists and sells these wonderfully strange Porsche 356-faced mutants that use mid-mounted BMW/Mini engines and have a really interesting charm of their own. Maybe I should see if they’ll let me try...

Sim racing is huge right now, and . Naturally, you’d think that F1 cars would be ripe for inclusion in games like iRacing and Assetto Corsa, but F1's stringent licensing terms and teams’ general unwillingness to share secrets tend to stand in the way. This is why iRacing’s announcement...

Here's How To Solve The Iran Nuclear Situation With Dodge Vipers
Okay, how I got here is pretty convoluted, so I’m asking you to just stick with me. I was doing some research on the oldest automotive platforms still in production, which led me to Iran Khodro, the Middle East’s biggest vehicle manufacturer, and the Peugeot 405s they build that...

The 'Worst Car In The History Of The World' Is One Step Away From Sounding Incredible
When Top Gear called the Lexus SC430 , I kind of understood where it was coming from. It was a bloated retiree coupe with a big V8, successor to the brawny SC300 and 400, grandpa Supras you could get with a legendary 2JZ. But we shouldn’t be so quick...

Something Weird Is Still Going On In Germany
I’ve been waiting decades now for hydrogen cars to become anything but a way to convince regulators you’re going green without ever actually doing anything. I might yet be waiting longer, if a fight in Germany continues. All that and more in for September 22, 2021. The developing debate...
