F1 And Le Mans Legend Mark Webber Explains Exactly When It's Time To Quit Racing-May 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:28

Formula One and Le Mans icon Mark Webber’s felt like a bit of a surprise. He gets along well with his team and his teammates, and he’s still at the top of his game. What brought him to leave his sport? One brutal crash from two years ago.

Webber explained in a lengthy interview with that it was his big crash at the 6 Hours of Brazil that made him think twice about continuing to race:

The Brazil crash (at Interlagos in 2014) was horrible for my wife, that was a really, really hard moment for her and my Mum is not enjoying my racing any more at all. It’s a very selfish profession that we have so I have factored in, 5% here, 5% there and sometimes I have been in the car in the last, while and have said (to myself) “Why am I in the car?”

When you ask yourself that question then it’s time to stop.

That 6 Hours of Brazil accident was leaving Webber with bruising and a concussion. Webber couldn’t even recall the accident after it happened. He told Daily Sportscar that he felt fortunate to only have those injuries from such a major crash:

Brazil was… I was very lucky in Brazil, very lucky. It was a gi-normous impact, it was also the longest time for me ever to recover from a crash so that was an eduction to say the least and then you see Brendon at Silverstone [referring to Brendon’s ].

Webber also let a couple other gems drop in the , such as the fact that he’s “probably not” looking forward to Shanghai and that the World Endurance Championship could do better with TV deals and making licensing harder for amateur drivers.

Perhaps that’s what I’ll miss the most from Webber as a driver: the ability to speak his mind even in front of the media.

Watch NASCAR Officials Use Power Tools To Extract Water Trapped Under Kansas Speedway
Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas developed a large bump hours before the Camping World Truck Series race scheduled for this evening. So officials simply drilled and sawed into the bump, only to find a bunch of water underneath. It’s a big weekend at the Kansas Speedway, with some truck...

Leading Porsche Eats The Wall And We're Not Even Halfway Done With The Nürburgring 24
This year’s Nürburgring 24 Hours was looking like an easy home race for Manthey Racing, with two Porsche 911 GT3 Rs in first and second place mere moments before. Their shop’s just down the road, man. They’ll do fine! Sadly, their No. 911 Porsche driver Romain Dumas just crashed at...

Embarrassing ‘Spainish Grand Prix’ Typo Somehow Gets Painted On F1 Track
Typos are bad and embarrassing. Why, the very website you are reading once called the then-GOP presidential nominee “” in a headline. So we’re sympathetic to the particularly noticeable typo before this weekend’s race, designing a “#SpainishGP” logo that got painted across the race track. Then some poor souls had...

One Aston Martin's Fuel Pump Only Lasted Through The First Hairpin Of The Nürburgring 24
It’s Craiglist’s favorite phrase beyond “no lowballers:” “needs fuel pump.” Unfortunately for the No. 40 Aston Martin Vantage V8, the first lap of the Nürburgring 24 Hours was a bit too true-to-Craigslist. A fuel pump problem brought their car to a halt at the first hairpin of the race. Driver...

The Nürburgring 24 Hours Is Too Incredible To Miss So Here's How To Watch
I knew the was a big deal before I got here. They’ve got 15.99 miles of track to run tons of cars at once, and regular enthusiasts routinely go door-to-door with Le Mans winners. But the sheer size and scale of this event is larger than I could have ever...

Mercedes Lost A Wheel At The Nürburgring 24, So Its Team Ran Out With The Wheel To Fix It
The No. 48 of Mercedes-AMG Team Mann Filter lost one of its wheels in spectacular fashion exiting pit lane tonight during the Nürburgring 24 Hours race. So, instead of waiting for their three-wheeled car to come back to them, a mechanics from the team brought tools and the wheel to...
