F1 Is Back With No Fans And Repeat Races-July 2024

is making its return on the first weekend of July, tentatively kicking off eight races thus far. What’s interesting is not just that they’ll be held with no fans, but also that they’ll include two double-headers.

F1 is difficult to run in a pandemic for a number of reasons, but two that spring up to mind are the immediate cost and the general difficulty of travel. And modern F1 has become very much about travel. Races crisscross the globe, never running more than one event per location. At best, teams get to enjoy races being held in the same general corner of the world, but teams had to go from Monaco to Montreal back to France again, and later in the season followed Italy with Singapore and then back to Russia before going to Japan. Doing this amidst a global pandemic is not easy!

As such, I’m not surprised that this new 2020 schedule opens with a double header in Austria and then later has a double at the British Grand Prix:

All of this comes after F1 had a fairly rocky start to 2020, planning on getting things going just as coronavirus lockdowns went global. Not great for a global sport! The initial opener, the Australian GP, was on , the , and then eventually everything got put on hold until now.

“Cash is king,” reigning Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton told Motorsport.com in Australia,…

The Coronavirus pandemic has killed thousands already, and it is difficult to understate both its…

And the no fans thing sort of makes sense. Have you tried buying an actual ticket to a race?

Rally Sweden Will Stave Off Snowless Death By Moving Up North In 2022
Climate change is killing Rally Sweden. It’s actually been killing the rally for several years now, because death at the hand of global warming is never quick. In organizers’ latest measure to stave off the event’s snowless demise, next year’s running will relocate north by some 500 miles, away...

Hell Yes It Sounds Like Formula One Is Actually Doing Sprint Qualifying
The current qualifying system in Formula 1 involves three stages in which drivers try to post their best lap times. F1 has said they might change that, or at least trial, . It sounds like it’s all but gotten the green light to do so this season. The experimental...

Haas Has Set Itself The Ambitious Goal Of Maybe Keeping Up With Williams In 2021
The Haas Formula One squad has had a rather inauspicious start to the 2021 season. It didn’t have its chassis updates ready for the first round of the season in Bahrain, so it decided to press on without them, effectively running a low-downforce version of last year’s car with...

Formula 1's Also-Rans Are Already Looking Ahead To 2022
The 2021 season started only a little more than a week ago with the Bahrain Grand Prix, though teams that likely won’t be vying for the title — everyone except and Mercedes, that is — sure sound like they wish it was 2022 already. That’s because next year there...

It Sounds Like There's Going To Be Lewis Hamilton Contract Drama All Season
Lewis Hamilton’s contract expired at the end of last season, and the question of will-he-or-won’t-he sign a new one for 2021 was one of the biggest unknowns throughout last year. Hamilton did eventually re-up, but It sounds like 2021 could more or less be a repeat. Now I still...

Daniel Ricciardo Says That Lewis Hamilton 'Isn't The Only One That Could Win Races In That Car,' Calls F1 'Idiots'
Daniel Ricciardo is a good driver and also a bit of a smiling assassin. He’s got smiles but he’s also got takes. Some of those takes are in the latest issue of the British lifestyle magazine Square Mile, which except that he’s a fun interview. Here he is, for...
