Holy Crap The Ford GT Is On Pole For Le Mans
Holy Crap The Ford GT Is On Pole For Le Mans-March 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:31

Say it with me now: U-S-A! U-S-A! In its first ever running at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the all-new will start on pole and in second in the LM GTE Pro class.

It’s a remarkable achievement for the twin-turbo V6 car just a year after its unveiling, and for a race exactly 50 years after the original Ford GT40's historic win at the 1966 running of Le Mans.

Ford and Porsche fans, thank Mother Nature for the rain. Today’s two wet qualifying sessions offered few chances for teams to beat their fastest laps from Wednesday’s. Porsche 919s took an overall 1-2 in qualifying, and the Ford GT will start 1 and 2 in LM GTE Pro, too. The other two Ford Chip Ganassi Racing Ford GTs start in 4th and 5th as well.

Fifty years after the Ford GT40's original 24 Hours of Le Mans win, there’s a Ford back at the top…

This year’s pole sitting lap was a 3:19.733 set by Neel Jani in the No. 2 LMP1-class Porsche 919. Its sister 919, the No. 1, will start from second position.

Because Le Mans sets its grid based on a team’s fastest lap, little changed from yesterday’s results. The No. 13 Rebellion Racing car was still the fastest of the privateer LMP1s, the No. 26 G-Drive Racing car will start off LMP2, the No. 68 Ford Chip Ganassi Team USA GT grabbed pole in LM GTE Pro, and LM GTE Am will be led by the No. 61 Clearwater Racing.

At this point, teams were mostly logging much needed practice laps for a potentially soggy weekend.

What of the controversy over the Ford GTs’ blisteringly quick times, then? The Automobile Club l’Ouest says that they’re investigating the Balance of Performance measures applied in the GT classes that are meant to even out the performance of the cars somewhat, per .

While the Ferrari 488 GTEs in LM GTE Pro were also trading fastest laps with the Ford GTs, ACO sporting director Vincent Beaumesnil confirmed to Daily Sportscar that there’s a possibility of tweaks being made on Friday night to better equalize the performance of the cars in the GT classes.

We’ll keep an eye on what happens there and see if anything comes down on the fast Fords or Ferraris. Otherwise, we may see that play out all over again.

Bobby Unser, Three-Time Indy 500 Champion And Pikes Peak Legend, Dies At 87
The Unser family is loaded with automotive talent, and few epitomized that quite as deeply as Bobby Unser. In his decades-long career, the Colorado native crushed stunning records at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (dubbed “Unser’s Peak” due to the family’s massive success there), won three Indianapolis 500...

Nikita Mazepin Is Not Getting Much Better
Nikita Mazepin finished Sunday’s over a minute behind 18th-placed Nicholas Latifi. Obviously, among the cars that finished, Mazepin was dead last. This is all but also increasingly cringe. Take Mazepin’s , for example, in which he and his race engineer try to convince themselves that they had a good...

I Am Going To Try, And Possibly Fail, To Explain NASCAR's New All-Star Race Format
The NASCAR Cup Series All-Star race has been a staple in American stock-car racing circles since it was first introduced as The Winston in 1985. It has traditionally been a celebration of winners and champions from the current and previous seasons, with a few extra folks added on recently...

Lewis Hamilton's Win In Portugal Shows He's Still A Force To Be Reckoned With In F1
While he may be faced with a significant challenge from his teammate Valtteri Bottas and his Red Bull Racing competitor Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton’s win at the Portuguese Grand Prix has once again proved that the seven-time World Champion will be a force to be reckoned with, even when...

MotoGP Brakes Have To Cope With 2Gs Of Deceleration Forces
To include a specific part on a racing machine, that part needs to be capable of an excess of wear and tear. It needs to endure higher forces than road-going machines, and it needs to be reliable over the course of an entire race. And that’s something Brembo knows...

Volkswagen ID.4 Survives Mexican 1000 Off-Road Race Without Mechanical Issues
Racer Tanner Foust has competed in countless long-distance off-road races, but after bringing the all-electric Volkswagen ID.4 home after the National Off-Road Racing Association (NORRA) Mexican 1000 off-road event on the Baja Peninsula, he was surprised. This was the first time he and co-driver Emme Hall contested a 1,000-mile...
