Huge Crash Crumples Mark Webber's Porsche 919 Into A Little Fiery Ball
Huge Crash Crumples Mark Webber's Porsche 919 Into A Little Fiery Ball-October 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:47

A massive crash took Mark Webber in the number 20 Porsche out of the race in the last hour of the World Endurance Championship's 6 Hours of São Paulo. The Porsche 919 collided with Matteo Cressoni in the number 90 Ferrari 458 of 8 Star Motorsports, then hit the wall.

This a heartbreaking end for the number 20 Porsche, as they had qualified in pole position for the race. Mark Webber had won two Brazilian Grands Prix at Interlagos during his career in Formula One, and he was set with the task of working back up from sixth place in the last hour of this WEC race.

Unfortunately, Webber has had issues at the last corner of Interlagos before. Here's a prior wipe-out from the 2003 Brazilian Grand Prix:

It's a particularly unforgiving turn with very little run-off.

Luckily, Webber signaled to cameras with a thumbs-up that he was fine as he was being carried away by medics today. Cressoni also escaped the wreck unharmed.

The 6 Hours of São Paulo ended under a safety car because of the full-course yellow caused by the wreck. The number 14 Porsche 919 finished in the lead, giving the Porsche LMP1-H team its first victory in WEC since entering the series this year.

: Per , both Matteo Cressoni and Mark Webber are being held overnight in the Bandeirantes hospital for observation and additional checks.

"Mark is OK, but he has had to go to hospital for further checks," said Porsche team boss Fritz Enzinger to AUTOSPORT. "We have spoken to him and said that people can go and see him, so Timo [Bernhard] and Brendon [Hartley, Webber's teammates] have gone to the hospital."

FIA medical delegate Dr. Alain Chantegret described the two drivers involved in today's big crash as being in satisfactory condition earlier today. However, given the severity of the accident, they are erring on the side of caution before releasing either one from care.
