It Just Hasn't Been A Good Day For NASCAR's Championship Contenders
It Just Hasn't Been A Good Day For NASCAR's Championship Contenders-May 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:28

The “Big One” is NASCAR a term typically only used at car-eating tracks like Daytona International Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway. But the Chase for the Championship thus far has been cruel to drivers going for the Sprint Cup Series title, and this huge wreck in Charlotte collected halfof them.

Chase driver Austin Dillon spun at the front of the field after being bumped by another Chase contenderduring the restart on lap 239 of 334. The spin collected a total of 12 cars, according to NBC’s broadcast. Chase contenders caught up in the mess included Dillon, Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards, Chase Elliott, Martin Truex Jr. and Kurt Busch, which makes six of the 12 remaining in the title hunt. Not all of those drivers sustained terrible damage, and most are still out on track.

The Chase hasn’t really been kind to its drivers so far, as both Joey Logano and Kevin Harvick already had trouble today—Logano drove into a wall early on in the race, and Harvick’s engine decided to give up on him. On lap 309 of 334, with a mere 26 laps to go, Chase contender Denny Hamlin’s engine blew from the second position.

Charlotte Motor Speedway’s event is the first race of the second round of the Chase, after which four more drivers will be eliminated. After three more races, the field will be down to four. They’ll battle for the title in the final race at Homestead-Miami Speedway in November.

But at this rate, winning the Chase will just be about who managed to avoid the wrath of the racing gods.

Road Atlanta Is Falling Apart In The Middle Of Petit Le Mans
Uh-oh. This may take a while. Chunks of Road Atlanta’s track surface started to come up during today’s Petit Le Mans race, leaving a gnarly pothole right on the racing line. Cars running over it kicked up enough hard chunks of pavement that officials made the call to repair it...

The Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge held its final race of 2016 today at Road Atlanta, finally deciding a close-fought season championship. The two race winners turned out to be the season champions themselves and came together at the end to smoke some tires. Spencer Pumpelly had clenched the ST-class...

Don't Feed The Bears Mazda Prototypes
The No. 55 Mazda Prototype conked out not once, but twice in front of the marshal bears decorating the fence at Petit Le Mans. Look, guys. Once is a goof, twice is a pattern. Bears are hungry. At Road Atlanta, they’re hungry for cars. Please remember not to feed the...

Revenge-Seeking Mustang Driver Fakes A Breakdown Then Punts Race Leader Off Track
A Mustang driver at the Sports Car Club of America Runoffs went with one of the most egregious revenge-seeking moves I’ve seen in ages. Never go full Cars and Coffee. Never, ever go full Cars and Coffee. The Runoffs are the grand finale of the SCCA season—their national championship weekend...
