McLaren F1 Test Driver Learns He's Out Of A Job Via Email On His Birthday
McLaren F1 Test Driver Learns He's Out Of A Job Via Email On His Birthday-May 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:37

Poor Kevin Magnussen. After being strung along for at the end of last year by the McLaren Formula One team, he was finally hired as a test driver for 2015. McLaren not only passed on the option to renew his contract for 2016, but the team principal’s assistant let him know via email on his birthday.

Behold, the ultimate indignity of being McLaren’s third wheel, as Magnussen told :

When the date of McLaren’s option on me passed, I was kind of waiting to hear from them. I didn’t hear anything for a few days, and then, after about a week, when I saw an email from [team principal] Ron [Dennis]’s personal assistant Justine [Bowen] in my inbox, I had an idea of what it might be.

It was a short paragraph explaining that there would be nothing for me in the future. It arrived on my birthday, actually.

Wow. I have no words, just wow. I mean, it’s poor form not to announce this kind of thing face-to-face. It’s even worse to shuffle it onto an assistant to write. Worst of all, it’s triply insulting for it to be sent on the recipient’s birthday. Shouldn’t that sort of thing be on a calendar somewhere?

Fortunately, Magnussen already knew 2016 wasn’t going to happen when the option to renew his contract ran out a week prior, so it wasn’t a shock to him. When asked if he took offense to the less than professional means of being let go, he replied, “Oh, I didn’t really mind. That’s just a detail, isn’t it? There’s no need to make a fuss about stuff like that.”

Besides, at least they’re letting him know about their plans for next year in October instead of this time.

Given that Magnussen ultimately wants to drive in a race instead of fart around in practice sessions and McLaren plan to keep Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso as drivers next year, he’s already on the hunt for something new. Magnussen told :

Look, I’d already made it clear that I was 100 percent determined to race next year, and obviously already have two contracted race drivers for next year in Jenson and Fernando. So, well, three into two won’t go, will it? I was only ever going to have a chance of a race drive in 2016 if one of them was going to retire or whatever, and that’s probably not now going to happen, so it was pretty clear that there was going to be no room for me at .

While Magnussen described this year as “frustrating” due to the lack of race time, he also says that there are a lot of people at McLaren that he’ll miss and that this year taught him a lot about the engineering side of F1. Button and , too, have both been very complimentary of the young driver’s skills lately.

Who might be replacing Magnussen, then? Perhaps McLaren development driver will step into the role, as he won the GP2 Championship this year, but part of me hopes Vandoorne will move into a full F1 drive somewhere after that kind of a performance. Maybe he’ll even find a team that doesn’t can drivers via email.

So, where will Magnussen go? His debut race with McLaren ended in a second place finish, so he’s no slouch, either. He still wants to stay in F1, and told that he’s been in talks with several teams lately. Unfortunately, with so few seats being shuffled around, there aren’t many places for him to land. If the worst case scenario happens, though, Magnussen insists that there are opportunities outside of F1 for him to still race.

An F1 drive is still clearly Magnussen’s goal, though. , dude.

The No. 48 of Mercedes-AMG Team Mann Filter lost one of its wheels in spectacular fashion exiting pit lane tonight during the Nürburgring 24 Hours race. So, instead of waiting for their three-wheeled car to come back to them, a mechanics from the team brought tools and the wheel to...

The Nürburgring 24 Hours Is Too Incredible To Miss So Here's How To Watch
I knew the was a big deal before I got here. They’ve got 15.99 miles of track to run tons of cars at once, and regular enthusiasts routinely go door-to-door with Le Mans winners. But the sheer size and scale of this event is larger than I could have ever...

One Aston Martin's Fuel Pump Only Lasted Through The First Hairpin Of The Nürburgring 24
It’s Craiglist’s favorite phrase beyond “no lowballers:” “needs fuel pump.” Unfortunately for the No. 40 Aston Martin Vantage V8, the first lap of the Nürburgring 24 Hours was a bit too true-to-Craigslist. A fuel pump problem brought their car to a halt at the first hairpin of the race. Driver...

Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas developed a large bump hours before the Camping World Truck Series race scheduled for this evening. So officials simply drilled and sawed into the bump, only to find a bunch of water underneath. It’s a big weekend at the Kansas Speedway, with some truck...

Embarrassing ‘Spainish Grand Prix’ Typo Somehow Gets Painted On F1 Track
Typos are bad and embarrassing. Why, the very website you are reading once called the then-GOP presidential nominee “” in a headline. So we’re sympathetic to the particularly noticeable typo before this weekend’s race, designing a “#SpainishGP” logo that got painted across the race track. Then some poor souls had...

Leading Porsche Eats The Wall And We're Not Even Halfway Done With The Nürburgring 24
This year’s Nürburgring 24 Hours was looking like an easy home race for Manthey Racing, with two Porsche 911 GT3 Rs in first and second place mere moments before. Their shop’s just down the road, man. They’ll do fine! Sadly, their No. 911 Porsche driver Romain Dumas just crashed at...
