Mini’s Long-Suffering Endurance Racing Team Finally Gets Its First Win
Mini’s Long-Suffering Endurance Racing Team Finally Gets Its First Win-March 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:25

Does having an on your team count as the Jalopnik Bump? That’s exactly what happened with the Mini JCW Team, whose No. 73 car finally got the team’s first win this afternoon in its first Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge race of 2017 at Daytona.

Drivers Derek Jones and Mat Pombo finally—finally!—after years of trying put the beloved Mini on top of the podium. Curiously, Daytona—where your top speed on the banking matters so much in a race—wasn’t the track where they thought they’d get that win.

“It’s not the aero car for Daytona, so this is kind of unexpected,” said Jones in a post-race press conference, referring to the Mini’s blocky shape.

“It’s essentially a breadbox,” explained Pombo. He said the car “punches a really big hole in the air,” and thus, it’s easy for competitors to come up on its rear.

That breadbox managed to fend off the far sleeker No. 56 Porsche Cayman of Murillo Racing to take the ST class win thanks to its ability to carry speed through corners, per the drivers.

Either way, I think it’s now been proven: the Jalopnik bump is still real, only it works in mysterious ways.

In the GS class, a broken axle ruined the pole-sitting No. 59 Ford Mustang GT4's day, taking it out of contention early. Ultimately, a small herd of Porsche Cayman GT4s took the top four finishing spots during the race, with the No. 12 Bodymotion Racing Porsche Cayman GT4 taking the win.

It’s 2019 and there’s finally an electric pro drift car. This is Napoleon Motorsports’ EL1, and I have questions. We’ve known that an EV has been coming to FD for a few months now, with even the series’ tech inspector . We also had a pretty good idea that it...

Netflix’s F1 Series Drive to Survive Is Worth Seeing Even If It’s Unsure of Itself Sometimes
Netflix’s series isvisually stunning, with one of the more intimate and compelling looks into the real world of modern-day Formula One that we’ve had in decades loved it, myself included. But the confused nature of its plot left me with a lot more questions than it answered. Mainly, who exactly...

Everyone Needs an Australian Rally Co-Driver Life Coach
If you were to rank the types of people who keep it real, rally co-drivers have to be close to the top. The world is coming at them at very high speed and their ass is on the line also if their driver screws up. There’s no time nor room...

This Screaming Honda Hillclimber Makes the World a Better Place
When we wake up each morning, we should endeavor to leave more joy in our wake than pain. That should seem obvious, but few do quite as good a job of that than Ruedi Fuhrer’s S2000-powered Honda CRX. Featuring about 280 horsepower of naturally aspirated two-liter ecstasy powering the front...

F1 and Le Mans Champ Fernando Alonso Is Getting Serious About Off-Road Racing
Living legend , who made a name for himself in Formula One and more recently , might finally officially be going off-road racing with team Toyota. He’s been test-driving a Dakar Rally-racing Hilux, and it sounds like he’s into it. OK, he actually sounds like an interview scene in Talladega...
