More Race Classes Banned At The Nürburgring-May 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:43

Several racing classes were at Deutsche Motor Sport Bund-sanctioned events at the Nürburgring following last weekend's . Now, per , that ban has been lifted for SP10 cars, but was extended to the Cup2, SP8T, E1-XP1, E1-XP2 and E1-XP classes, plus GT cars in H4.

SP10 includes the Stéphane Ratel Organisation-sanctioned GT4 cars. GT4 is a slower class of cars than the Nissan GT-R GT3 that was involved in this weekend's accident. The GT-R became airborne at Flugplatz and struck several spectators, leaving one dead.

Included in the ban now were many of the faster classes that weren't previously named in the ban. A special meeting was held to discuss the temporary ban this week, with yet another meeting scheduled for Tuesday to discuss solutions.

"The goal is to look for solutions that enable safe and fair racing on the Nordschleife in the future," explained DMSB President Hans-Joachim Stuck in a .

Stuck explained that all aspects of spectator and competitor safety will be examined, including vehicles, regulations, the track itself, and spectator areas.

"Everything comes to the test, in which we will discuss short-term solutions for the next few weeks as well as long-term, to make possible the sport at this unique track in ten or twenty years from now," he explained in the .

Tuesday's meeting will include professional and amateur racers, safety and technology experts, manufacturer representatives, Nürburgring officials, and representatives from VLN as well as the Nürburgring 24 Hours.

With the Nürburgring 24 Hours set for mid-May, DMSB officials are hoping to find both short-term solutions that will work for now as well as craft a long-term plan that will make the Nürburgring safer for everyone.
