NASCAR Can't Even Get Cheating Right
NASCAR Can't Even Get Cheating Right-May 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:15

teams cheat, or “bend the rules,” to say it nicely. They always have, and it’s . But a “” inspection system this year is causing all kinds of problems. Teams are mad that they keep failing, and NASCAR’s mad that teams can’t just bring legal cars.

NASCAR has several inspections during and after a race weekend, including a pre-qualifying inspection. It’s caused a lot of top-level Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series teams to miss qualifying attempts this year after failing inspection multiple times, like when 13 drivers Auto Club Speedway.

That happened to at Kansas Speedway over the weekend, and pretty much nobody was happy about it. Teams were mad about how inspection went, and NASCAR’s executive vice president and chief racing development officer, Steve O’Donnell, was mad that teams were telling people they were mad.

Here’s what O’Donnell said on Sirius XM NASCAR, from :

“You’ve heard me come on and say we’ve got the most talented engineers in the world working on the race cars and we believe that, and it’s certainly frustrating because it is on the teams to present their cars for inspection,” O’Donnell said.

“It’s become the equivalent of a Kris Bryant (of the Chicago Cubs baseball team) coming to the plate with a bat that you can’t use and the umpire says you can’t use that, (he) comes back with a bat you can’t use and the umpire says it again, and then the third time says you can’t make your plate appearance, and the batter runs to the media and says, ‘I can’t believe they did this.’

NASCAR has tried to combat the issue of “repeat offenders,” as Motorsport.com reports, with the series upping its penalties. Teams get practice time cut, their starting positions docked, and can have crew members ejected. Even then, O’Donnell said “it hasn’t seemed to work” and that “the last thing we want to do is penalize any team, we don’t want that to be the narrative.”

NASCAR’s senior vice president of competition, Scott Miller, the 13 failures at Auto Club were “split between chassis, weights and measures and the body scan.” After all four Hendrick Motorsports cars failed that day, though, the team’s competition director Jeff Andrews also criticized the inspection system. From :

[Andrews] said the issues on the four Hendrick cars were “similar” in the area of the deck lid.

“We’ve got to go back, we need to talk internally and talk with NASCAR,” Andrews told FS1. “We felt like we were making changes in the area affected and we were not seeing the results when we went back through.”

Remember, this is a sport where teams have tried to in the background of a broadcast and where Kyle Larson said in a post-race interview from Kansas that he was glad he had wreck damage because of a , a caved rear window, was apparent on his car by the end of the race.

Here’s what Larson said on the race broadcast about how the caved window got there, from :

“Definitely (from the damage) because I didn’t have it until after Blaney and I got together, so I’m glad to see that we have a lot of damage back there,” Larson said. “Because obviously if there was no damage, we’d probably get a penalty, and who knows we might still, but I got a ton of damage back there.

“These cars are pretty rigid, and one piece of damage can affect the whole rest of the car as you can see, so we’ll see what NASCAR says about it, but I think it’s pretty obvious we have a ton of damage back there.”

Larson’s car was taken back to the NASCAR Research and Development center for further inspection. Any penalties would come out this week.

Either way, penalties probably won’t change how teams approach races in the future. NASCAR teams cheat, , the teams , NASCAR reacts again, and everybody goes on with their lives. That’s just how this stuff works.

But with even , something’s got to get fixed. Cheating is supposed to be the fun, interesting part of NASCAR. What’s going on?

Larson’s team got a , his crew chief a $50,000 fine, and his car chief a two-race suspension in points races. Larson also lost the stage point he won in Kansas, and NASCAR docked him 20 points in the owner and driver standings.
