’s next-generation prototype car was supposed to debut in full at next year’s Daytona 500, but delays in development due to the novel coronavirus have pushed those plans back another year.

Here’s the statement from John Probst, Senior VP of Racing Innovation for NASCAR:

Due to challenges related to the coronavirus pandemic, the debut of the Next Gen car will be delayed until 2022. The decision was made in collaboration with the OEMs and team owners. We will continue to develop the Next Gen car, and a revised testing timeline will be shared when more information is available.

Considering NASCAR is one of the most non-essential group activities I can fathom, this doesn’t come as a shock.

Johns Hopkins University has reported over one million people have contracted the virus globally, leading to more than 54,000 deaths. In the U.S., there are over 245,000 reported cases and over 6,000 deaths so far, . So yeah, the Next Gen NASCAR can wait a bit.

The new car, which will be the seventh-generation whenever it finally races, has already been tested with new , use of a , and it’s likely it will even get some either when it debuts or further down the road.

NASCAR has also been exploring the idea of to mix things up a bit. Now if we can just get through this coronavirus nightmare, I want to see just how different this new car ends up being, and I hope they do end up going with some road course stuff.

In America, I should be able to buy a 72 ounce frozen beverage from 7/11 and be at risk of walking out of the store into a full NASCAR race. It just feels right.

Jari-Matti Latvala Rolls Out Of Rally Argentina Lead Like A Bowling Ball
There’s an old Beavis and Butt-Head where the dynamic duo decides to try out a dryer’s spin cycle by climbing inside. That’s probably what it felt like inside the World Rally Championship Volkswagen of Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila when they lost the Rally Argentina lead in a massive rollover....

Praise Be To Catch Fence For Doing Its Job In This Crazy Stadium Super Truck Roll
We love because they do everything bigger and crazier—even with wipe-outs and camera angles of said wipe-outs. Enjoy this harrowing ride-along aboard a truck that gets thrown into a catch fence. Driver Pat O’Keefe doesn’t land quite right after the first jump, and his truck hasn’t quite settled in before...

The Saddest Line I've Ever Read In A Racing Live Blog
If a backmarker falls off the timing screen, do they make a sound? Formula One did not have the issues IndyCar had with timing and scoring at Long Beach last weekend, but according to Motorsport.com’s of the Chinese Grand Prix, they somehow lost track of the Manor car of Rio...

It Took A Legendary Woman To Demolish Bernie Ecclestone's Dumb Sexist Comment
It’s almost a non-story when Formula One head troll makes an embarrassing, sexist comment lately. Unfortunately, racing legend Mario Andretti made some facepalm-worthy statements in agreement this time, too. Then three-time NHRA drag racing champion Shirley Muldowney put it all in perspective. You see, Ecclestone has become a bit like...

The Grand Prix Of Long Beach Was The World's Harshest Massage Chair
This weekend, IndyCar heads to the butter smooth surface at Barber Motorsports Park. Last weekend’s street course at Long Beach, however, was a rough-and-tumble riot of a thing, and the series stuck a camera on Graham Rahal’s helmet that proves it. Come along for a wild ride. Welcome to ,...
