Rally Mexico Blames Trump And Dieselgate For Its Near-Death Experience
Rally Mexico Blames Trump And Dieselgate For Its Near-Death Experience-February 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:24

The World Rally Championship race Rally Mexico produced one of the most incredible rally endings in years after Kris Meeke on the last stage. But Rally Mexico happened among financial peril this year, per , due to rising costs in the wake of Donald Trump’s election combined with the withdrawal of Volkswagen as a major sponsor.

The big, international series we love to watch rely heavily on being able to move and procure necessary items across international borders. Ahead of Rally Mexico, Trump’s election had a sharp negative impact on the value of the Mexican peso. Mexico has been a favorite target of Trump’s xenophobic ire with all his promises to build a wall, and thus, the peso fell to a record low against the U.S. dollar following his election.

Rally director Patrick Suberville explained to Motorsport.com just how bad things became in the months ahead of the rally:

The whole Trump story caused the currency to devalue by 40 percent in one week. Most of the things we use [in the rally] come from the US and they suddenly became a lot more expensive.

The event was in trouble this year because we lost our main sponsor three months prior to the start; we learned that Volkswagen pulled out when we were on our way to sign the contract with them.

With from its Dieselgate scandal, Volkswagen couldn’t be lured back to sponsor the rally. Instead, Suberville told Motorsport.com that the Mexican government stepped in to help make it happen.

Of course, the rally still didn’t go off without its own problems. Heavy traffic between the opening evening stage in Mexico City and the rally base 250 miles away in León caused the of the next two stages when no one’s car arrived on time.

According to Motorsport.com, the Mexico City stage was funded by the Mexican government. It was a slick PR move for the rally, as it no doubt put the rally in front of a crowd who probably wouldn’t otherwise get to see it in person. However, its late start time and the complicated logistics of hosting the stage in a city of 22 million people mean that they’ll have to probably rework it for next year, should all of the rally’s organizers and benefactors try that again.

Impatience Is A Hell Of A Drug On Track
Today, Formula E went to the narrow, windy streets of Monaco on a shortened version of its iconic course, where passing is still as tough as it gets. I’m not sure I can think of any alternate universe where this crazy red mist pass attempt around the outside would actually...

This PIT Maneuver In NASCAR's Pit Lane Is The Pits
Chase Elliott didn’t quite see Michael McDowell’s No. 95 car swoop in for a pit stop in Kansas Speedway’s pit lane, turning McDowell around and damaging both cars in the process. Well, that’s the pits. McDowell’s crew was able to service the No. 95 while it was backwards, as it...

Alonso Pulls Off A Spanish Grand Prix Qualifying Miracle In This Year's Worst F1 Car
There’s no doubt that two-time Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso is the best driver in the worst car, with a McLaren that failed him on his out-lap in Free Practice 1. Bizarrely, that McLaren F1 car held it together long enough to make into the final Qualifying 3 session...

When , Kimi Raikkonen, wrecked out on the first lap of the Spanish Grand Prix Sunday, a young Ferrari fan in the crowd showed more emotion than Raikkonen probably has, total, in his lifetime. The kid looked like someone stole his new puppy. But Raikkonen turned that all around. It...

This Finger Is Canadian For "Hello," I Think
The bird is the word at Indianapolis Motor Speedway today. Canadian IndyCar racer James Hinchcliffe seems kind of unhappy with the fact that Spencer Pigot passed him, eh? Here’s a slow-mo to savor, just because there’s nothing like the slipping by of a a middle finger on to live television:...
