"It just sounded like power." Jacques Lafitte's Ligier-Matra would proudly shout over modern-day Formula One cars with its deep, growling V12. This car is one of the angriest things ever to wear French racing blue, and here's wonderful vintage onboard footage of it running at Monza.

Granted, the sound and video quality are, um, vintage. This is from the 1978 Italian Grand Prix.

Despite the periods where the cars disappear into the shadows, it's still great to follow this beast around this historic race track. Watch as it catches up to slower cars under braking, and runs away on straights.

It looks as if it's perfectly set up for this track based on its performance, but all the sawing back and forth on through the corners that Lafitte has to do with the wheel proves that it's still an unwieldy monster to keep in line.

Lafitte took this car to fourth place in this grand prix.

No music. No other noises except the roar of other cars. Turn the speakers up to 11. This is how the glory days of Formula One sounded.
