Oops! Dakar Riders Arrested For Riding Over Archaeological Site-February 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:46

As far as worst case rally scenarios go, getting arrested in a foreign country lies just beneath unrepairable failures and spectacular race-ending crashes. Two riders at Dakar found out the hard way that the route exists for a reason: so you don't go over an archaeological site by accident.

reports that motorcycle racer and quad racer lost the trail somewhere in the desert outside Antofagasta, Chile, during yesterday's.

The riders were taken into custody Thursday evening, where they were accused of damaging archaeological sites in the desert. Dakar Rally officials accompanied them into custody.

"We do not want to break anything and apologize for what happened. It 'was just a mistake," explained Casuccio, as translated from La Gazetta dello Sport.

According to , the two riders were detained for thirty minutes and then released. However, La Gazetta dello Sport warns that the Chilean court could prevent them from leaving the country as the rally moves into Bolivia.

The Dakar Rally reaches Bolivia during Stage 7-A, which bikes and quads will run on January 11.

Clarification: Photo is of another quad rider, as photos of Koolen and Casuccio were not available. The above rider is Sebastián Palma.

This Is What A Fire Full Of Nope Looks Like
This Is What A Fire Full Of Nope Looks Like
A nasty electrical fire took Clint Bowyer out early from today’s Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway. Nothing has encapsulated the term “nope” more than Bowyer’s quick exit and helmet toss following this particularly grody-smelling car-b-que. If that wasn’t bad enough, Bowyer’s car started rolling after he got out, so...

Stewart Ends Crazy Last-Lap NASCAR Battle By Putting Hamlin In The Wall
Sonoma Raceway proved once again why it’s one of the most interesting races on the NASCAR Sprint Cup schedule. Holy crap, the last lap delivered. First, Denny Hamlin finally got around Tony Stewart after having carefully whittled away at Stewart’s lead. Less than a lap was left, and it was...

You Suck At Driving But EXR's School And Monster Spec Racer Will Make You Faster
I’m what you might call a “.” My first wheel-to-wheel racing experience was behind the wheel of a Mk III Jetta, made up to resemble a tiki hut. And while I’ve done hundreds of laps on some of America’s greatest racing circuits, it’s mostly been a trial by fire, and...

Even the pros get this wrong. Not all loose wheels are from loose lugs (ask me how I know), but it’s a common error and an easy fix. ...

Shocking Racing Crash Sends Miata Airborne
Shocking Racing Crash Sends Miata Airborne
I don’t even want to try to parse out who was at fault for this wreck. That’s not really the point. What’s gnarly is that the Miata driver suffered multiple fractures from the wreck but thankfully survived, as the YouTube uploader reports: In the Group 7 Qualifying session, Leland Englebardt...

We Finally Found Out How Fast A Gutted Tesla Model S Is At Pikes Peak
Blake Fuller’s is being called “the fastest production electric vehicle” to ever race the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb after finishing the event with an impressive sub-12 minute time. I’m not sure if it’s really “production” at this point, but it’s undoubtedly quick. Last weekend marked the 100th anniversary (and...
