Ride Onboard The Bloodhound For A Super Chill 334 MPH Practice Run
Ride Onboard The Bloodhound For A Super Chill 334 MPH Practice Run-June 2024

Most of us have taken a car above the ton. Some of us have taken a car to VMax, usually an economy car of some sort that tops out just over the triple digit mark. A lucky few of us have touched 200, usually having spent lots of money to get there. A rarefied few have driven anything with wheels above 250. To reach 334 is astonishingly fast to most mere mortals, but for the Bloodhound and Andy Green it’s just the beginning.

This pair are slowly testing their way toward breaking the 1000 mph barrier. The current record belongs to Green himself, a 760 mph run set back in 1997.

In the long road toward the big number attempt the Bloodhound team have taken the machine down to South Africa to test it on a long flat section of hard packed desert. The first run was a quick jaunt up to 200 mph to test the functionality of the brakes. The second run was a coast down from 334 to test rolling resistance.

The team also wanted to test how the supersonic car handled with side-wind. At the 4:41 mark in the video, you can see a not insubstantial correction of the steering wheel as the car is blown several feet off the middle line. Green later commented that he didn’t ever want to drive the car in winds this strong ever again. I don’t blame him.

Aside from a few wind-induced wiggles, the whole run seems very quick and mostly serene. It’s very quiet inside Green’s helmet, which makes sense as most of the loud stuff is several feet behind him and pointing the noisy fiery bits rearward.

Watching the video, it’s astonishing how horrible the radio communications are. They’re impossible to understand. How is it that, 118 years after the first transatlantic radio signal, a voice broadcast from a really fast car half a mile away sounds like Darth Vader speaking Vietnamese recorded into a TalkBoy and played through the speaker of an original GameBoy? I didn’t understand a single word.

If you were to rank the types of people who keep it real, rally co-drivers have to be close to the top. The world is coming at them at very high speed and their ass is on the line also if their driver screws up. There’s no time nor room...

Another Mercedes 1-2 in Bahrain Spells Heartbreak for Young Polesitter Charles Leclerc
The 21 year old Ferrari driving Charles Leclerc ran about as perfect a race as one can expect. Aside from a poor start that saw him swallowed up by teammate Sebastian Vettel and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, Chuck put in a top notch race to not only re-pass Hamilton, but also...

Holy Crap the First All-Electric Professional Drift Car Is a Camaro
It’s 2019 and there’s finally an electric pro drift car. This is Napoleon Motorsports’ EL1, and I have questions. We’ve known that an EV has been coming to FD for a few months now, with even the series’ tech inspector . We also had a pretty good idea that it...

You Are Looking at the First Aston Martin to Race in Lemons
I remember when the Aston Martin DB7 was the fresh hot shit, and now they’ve depreciated so much that one team of enterprising Aston owners have resorted to racing their once prized Jag-based supercar in the 24 Hours of Lemons event at NOLA Motorsports Park this weekend. Well, that’s not...

This Screaming Honda Hillclimber Makes the World a Better Place
When we wake up each morning, we should endeavor to leave more joy in our wake than pain. That should seem obvious, but few do quite as good a job of that than Ruedi Fuhrer’s S2000-powered Honda CRX. Featuring about 280 horsepower of naturally aspirated two-liter ecstasy powering the front...

Netflix’s F1 Series Drive to Survive Is Worth Seeing Even If It’s Unsure of Itself Sometimes
Netflix’s series isvisually stunning, with one of the more intimate and compelling looks into the real world of modern-day Formula One that we’ve had in decades loved it, myself included. But the confused nature of its plot left me with a lot more questions than it answered. Mainly, who exactly...
