Scott Dixon will start on pole for Sunday’s 101st running of the Indianapolis 500, ahead of Ed Carpenter and . Formula One superstar Fernando Alonso, who will skip the F1 Monaco Grand Prix to run the Verizon IndyCar Series’ biggest race, will start fifth in his rookie outing.

Dixon clocked in at 232.164 mph in qualifying, with Carpenter at 231.664 mph and Rossi at 231.487 mph. Two-time F1 champion and rookie IndyCar driver Alonso wasn’t far behind, logging 231.3 mph for fifth spot just over two weeks after he did his and hours after .

Alonso, expected to (that’s not hard to beat, since ), was on provisional pole for a short time before Rossi, and later, Dixon, took it. Alonso out-qualified and , both IndyCar champions, in his rookie outing.

The who ran for the pole on Sunday will start behind Dixon in the Indy 500 as follows: Carpenter, Rossi, Takuma Sato, Alonso, J.R. Hildebrand, Kanaan, Marco Andretti and Power.
