The Cheapest Tesla Model Y Is Apparently No Longer Available
The Cheapest Tesla Model Y Is Apparently No Longer Available-July 2024

Tesla Model Y

If you were hoping to score the cheapest, you’re out of luck for now. reports that the base version of the Model Y crossover is gone from Tesla’s online configurator.

The entry-level Model Y came in one configuration: all-wheel drive with dual motors. And at $49,130, it was the cheapest Model Y Tesla offered. It was also the only one of the Model Y’s configurations that was assembled at Tesla’s Gigafactory in Austin; the others were assembled at the company’s Fremont factory.

The loss of the entry Model Y leaves just two others for buyers to choose from. The new entry point is the $50,490 Model Y Long Range with 330 miles of range and the $54,490 Model Y Performance with 303 miles of range.

No one knows why Tesla dropped the model. The company’s modus operandi is to seemingly do things for no reason without saying anything to anyone except themselves, especially the press. This seems to be another one of those times. Some, like and is speculating that the move has something to do with the start of production, which is plausible. From MotorTrend:

The Model Y uses Tesla’s 4680 battery cells which are likely the same cells that will power the Cybertruck. Considering the anticipation for the stainless steel electric truck, it wouldn’t be illogical to assume that Tesla wants as many 4680 cells as possible going toward Cybertruck production.

Still, the base Model Y trim could suddenly come back tomorrow without warning, because this is Tesla we’re dealing with. Until then it looks as if the Model Y isn’t as cheap as it once was, on paper at least.

Driving Subaru's WRX STI Rally Car Will Melt Every Part Of Your Brain
Driving Subaru's WRX STI Rally Car Will Melt Every Part Of Your Brain
Rallying is a nuanced art. It takes years of training to get to the level where you can drive an open class car like this Subaru WRX STI with a sequential gearbox and 500 pound feet of torque. But I didn't have years of training. I had hours. And driving...

2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat: The Jalopnik Review
I’m not gonna lie to you: the first time I drove the 707-horsepower , it kind of scared the shit out of me just a little bit. (: The people who manage Fiat Chrysler’s Texas press fleet sent me an email out of the blue that said “Hey, we got...

For $15,000, This 2003 Audi S8 Will Let You Stick Around
Do you remember the movie Ronin and how crazy everyone drove in it? For reasons that will become evident, today's S8 is emblematic of both that film and the lone warrior mythos. Will its price however, prove more of a bonin'? Yesterday's proved to be the Sommer of our discontent,...

Have you ever wanted to go back in time? Today's Volvo is so blessedly original and low mileage that driving it would be the next best thing. Is its price however, worth turning back the clock? Jay-Z is married to Beyoncé, which might make you wish you were Jay-Z, at...

Hip MTV Study: The Youths Don't Hate Cars After All
At last, sweet vindication. For years I've been fighting against the myth parroted by terrified industry types and lazy Boomer assholes , don't want cars, and only ride buses and their super-cool Razor scooters. Young people DO want cars! How do I know? Because of a new study by the...

For $43,000, This 1985 Ole Sommer Oscar Is Your Morning Danish
Today's contender is a slab-side Cobra replica built by a Copenhagen Volvo dealer and powered by a turbo red block. If that doesn't blow your mind, maybe its price won't either. Okay, we all know that the nickname of Volvo's first-ever car, the ÖV4, was Jakob owing to a prototype...
