The Volkswagen I.D. R Is Coming for the Nürburgring Electric Record
The Volkswagen I.D. R Is Coming for the Nürburgring Electric Record-June 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:10

The super fast all-electric is officially doing it. It’s hunting down the next lap record to crush, this time at the —and it’s already hit the track.

No, this isn’t the real deal. Not yet! Volkswagen is just doing some test runs to get the car ready for its actual record-setting attempt this summer. But I gotta say, the machine already looks pretty damn impressive on track.

If you’re thinking that this looks a hell of a lot different to the car that conquered Pikes Peak, your eyes aren’t deceiving you. While it’s largely the same car, the I.D. R has acquired some brand new tech in the form of , which is intended to reduce the extra downforce it’ll be generating when compared to the higher altitudes of Pikes Peak.

It’s also adopted a handsome blue paint touch to its livery, whereas the Pikes Peak car was largely matte gray. A new look for a new record. I respect it.

We don’t have any official times yet (I’m sure Volkswagen is keeping them on the down-low until the actual record attempt), but driver Romain Dumas looks like he’s having one hell of a time behind the wheel.

The current lap record for an electric car at the Nordschleife stands at 6 minutes 45.9 seconds, set by the NIO EP9 in 2017. The overall lap record is a 5 minutes, 19.546 seconds set by a . The I.D. R is only aiming for the EV record, but I can’t be the only person quietly keeping their fingers crossed that they might touch the overall record.
