IndyCar inexperience caught out former Formula One racer Marcus Ericsson as he entered the pit lane on lap 138 in today’s Indianapolis 500. Getting slowed down from over 200 miles per hour down to the pit road speed limit isn’t exactly a cake walk. It appears Ericsson was just a bit too fast entering the lane and locked up his brakes trying to get everything whoa’d up.

The resulting spin and ping-pong off the inside pit lane wall with both the front and rear of his car could have really been a disaster. Ericsson’s car slid down through Sage Karam’s pit stall at a speed that shouldn’t be seen on pit lane. As luck would have it, Sage was not sitting in his pit stall, and his pit crew was not in the lane ready to receive him. If they had been, this would be a very different news update.

Ericsson is lucky that nothing worse than this happened. This crash happened at a low enough speed that he is likely to be a-okay, but his car is quite damaged, and he is a few laps down.

AVUS Was A Good Race Track, Actually
AVUS Was A Good Race Track, Actually
Last week, my wonderful colleague Steve DaSilva asked the Jalopnik audience for its thoughts on the worst race tracks in motorsport history, and one daring human offered a treasonous answer: AVUS. My heart rate immediately spiked upon seeing that response, and I knew I couldn’t help myself. I was...

Remember when Volkswagen was so ashamed of that it ditched motorsport altogether and embarked on an EV-obsessed PR campaign? That guilt evidently lasted all of six years. As has been reported in recent months, two of the conglomerate’s premium brands — Porsche and Audi — are eyeing tie-ups with...

Shirley Shahan Was One Of Drag Racing's Fastest Women
I don’t know what I was expecting when I sat down to read Shirley Shahan: The Drag-On Lady by Patrick Foster, but I have to admit that I was delightfully surprised. Here was a photo-heavy book about one of drag racing’s most badass women, and her life story was incredible....

There's No Better Vintage Racing Than Ford GT On Ford GT Action
I am convinced that there is no better vintage racing happening anywhere in the world right now than at Goodwood, and perhaps the best of that is when the circuit puts on its famous Members Meeting. There’s a new Members Meeting, the 79th running, going down this coming weekend....

Why Battery Technology Is So Important, As Per One Formula E Chief Technical Officer
Battery technology has evolved rapidly since Formula E, the first-ever all-electric open-wheel racing series, hit the track for the first time in 2014. Skepticism reigned — but the evolution of battery technology has also been unmatched. While in Mexico City for this year’s ePrix, I had a chance to...
