As we all know, , to say nothing of making cars that drive themselves, which is exponentially harder. I’d like to think we at Jalopnik , our dear readers, just how hard making autonomous cars has proven, but just in case we haven’t, here’s another go at it.

The and what can cause them to, well, not work. Using AV disengagement reports from the California DMV as well as “voluntary reports from AutoX, GM Cruise, Nvidia, Uber, Waymo, Nuro and other self-driving vehicle companies that describe their autonomous technology and safety standards,” the Post put together a little interactive game about what trips up AVs and why it requires so much human intervention.

It’s a lot of fun. It shows the limitations AVs often have currently:

And puts the onus on you, a human with eyes and a brain, to potentially avert disaster.

Among the examples are a school bus blocking the sensors, mistaking pedestrians for cyclists and vice versa, or needing to pull over due to an incoming thunderstorm.

Overall, the game is a neat little reminder that AVs remain a very difficult problem to solve, and their inability to make complex inferences from their surroundings is turning out to be a much bigger handicap for effective driving than many technologists previously thought.

Three to five years ago, many AV boosters thought we’d have self-driving cars available for widespread use by now. Instead, we still have about 1,500 on the road undergoing testing. Most experts still think we’re still decades away from commercially available full autonomy. In the , humans are underrated.

Give it a try .

Why No One Is Beating Tesla's Range
I made a mistake this week. I tweeted. I tweeted that, while I like the , I was disappointed that it couldn’t beat the range of the Tesla Model S years after it came out. And while I stand by the opinion that the Taycan isn’t fundamentally changing the...

Getting A 2020 Toyota Supra To 1,000 Horsepower Means Making A Lot Of Custom Parts
Tuner car legend , his team and some collaborators are trying to build a that will make 1,000 horsepower on an engine dyno. Since the car’s brand new, an aftermarket doesn’t really exist. So a lot of upgrade parts will have to be built for the first time. Here’s...

Telsa's 'Electromagnetic Windshield Wiper' Patent Looks Pretty Cool For A Windshield Wiper
Windshield wiper technology has been pretty stagnant since Mary Anderson came up with, basically, the swiping blades we recognize today. Sure, we have intermittent settings and rain-sensing and Mercedes had that , but the concept hasn’t changed much since 1903. though, the reign of the single-pivot wiper may be in...

Domestic Brands Charge A Hefty Premium For Advanced Safety Features
Now that the American automakers have, for the most part, ceded the small car market to the import brands, you would think they would try to field competitive offerings in the crossover/SUV segment. However, when it comes to what most car buyers are really looking for in a family...

Some People Can Now Rent Cars Through Lyft, Though We're Not Sure Why They Would
Lyft disrupted the taxi space. Then it . Then it got into scooters. Now, it’s created a service that’s like Enterprise Rent-A-Car except... well, actually, it’s basically just Enterprise. Maybe that’s why Lyft hasn’t publicized the program very much. While it’s been reported in Engadget and Business Insider, there...
