Crashing The Best Cheap Serious Racing Series There Is

“If you’ve ever been in a race car,” racer Fabian Berger says, elbow-deep in the guts of a BMW E30, “then you know it’s worth wrenching the whole night.” This is the world of AER, , a budget racing series that’s not for amateurs. I, an amateur, found that out the hard way.

By that, I mean I stared down another race car as it plowed directly into my door at highway speeds.

Last fall the AER organizers invited Team Jalopnik out to compete against Team Road & Track in the season closer at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. They hooked us up with BMW E30 race cars built by the wonderful folks at . Our team, with varying levels of racing experience, was actually doing decent during qualifying and practice and feeling good about the weekend.

Then it started raining.

In one of my first laps of wheel-to-wheel racing, I looped the BMW on a particularly slick corner. Just as I was about to get the car going again, I looked up to see an Acura Integra bearing down upon me.

A set of very thick NASCAR bars in the BMW’s roll cage kept the Acura’s front bumper out of the area that my hip bone was occupying.

I looked up and there it was, an Acura Integra pointing straight at me—spun out, stalled right on…

It was one of the lowlights of my career and my life, but it was also an excellent demonstration of what AER is, why it exists, and who it’s for.

The series is set up with the rigor of a big-budget racing series, only without the huge costs. It’s a step up from Lemons and Chump Car, and requires a greater degree of driving talent and experience.

But it’s still financially accessible, and while it’s more serious than other low-cost series, AER hasn’t lost their spirit of camaraderie.

It was a blast, even though it ended badly for Team Jalopnik—this time. We’ll be back.

Here's Your First Peek At What A 2021 Spec Formula One Car Might Look Like
The next generation of Formula One regulations are supposed to fix the sport. We’re all well aware of how difficult passing can be in with the current specification car, as the turbulence caused by following in the wake of a car ahead makes your own aero wash out, which...

Ford Finally Brings Its NASCAR Xfinity Series Mustang Out Of 2011
If we think about it, 2011 was a simpler time. Half of the population didn’t yell “Fake news!” at every mention of, oh, climate change or any other existential crisis, NASCAR didn’t have , and LMFAO was teaching us all how to and , one song replay at a...

Watch An F1 Car And A Motorcycle Go Head-To-Head On A Slalom Test
In case you’ve missed it, racer Guy Martin and former driver David Coulthard have been competing in head-to-head challenges to examine the differences in science and technology between their two sports. It’s been a lot of fun—but none more so than the slalom challenge. I can’t say I ever really...

Yes But How Does The Archetypal Drift Car Handle The Nürburgring
It’s abundantly clear that any yahoo can turn an S13 Nissan 200SX into a drift car. But what’s it like turning one into a “Ring tool,” as they say around the Nürburgring? What’s it like lapping one on the Nordschleife? Well, it looks, uh, maybe as sideways as you’d...

How Much Standardization Is Too Much In Motorsport?
How Much Standardization Is Too Much In Motorsport?
is looking to make big changes for 2021, including proposing a lot more standardization in the rulebook regarding what parts teams can use and how much money can be spent. But is that additional degree of standardization too much? Ferrari has already lashed out against the sanctioning body’s attempt...
