Volkswagen's Last Rally Winner Finally Lands In A 2017 WRC Car
Volkswagen's Last Rally Winner Finally Lands In A 2017 WRC Car-May 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:22

One of the biggest travesties of the Volkswagen World Rally Championship team shutting down was that it left its very last rally winner, , without a ride for 2017. His more experienced teammates Sébastien Ogier and Jari-Matti Latvala easily landed on other teams, but Mikkelsen was out of top-level work.

Finally, thanks to a one-off drive with Citroën at the upcoming Rally Italia Sardegna, we’ll get to see what Mikkelsen can do behind the wheel of a top-level 2017-spec Citroën C3 WRC car, reports the .

Mikkelsen’s been picking up rally drives where he can all year, except they’ve been in the lower-level WRC 2 series, which acts as a sort of feeder series to the main WRC. It’s rally’s equivalent of having to go back and run Indy Lights after a decent IndyCar season, or doing Formula 2 after winning in Formula 1.

And it hurts to watch! At Rally Portugal, Mikkelsen had built up over three minutes of lead in front of the rest of the WRC 2 field before a took him on the final stage of the rally.

Rally Portugal crashed a lot of cars, and Mikkelsen was clearly pushing it, as you know he’s thirstier than thirsty having to compete in a feeder series, so I’ll focus on the stat before that untimely crash: over three minutes of lead. Usually leads are measured in seconds or maybe a bit over a minute, but three or more minutes is pretty dominant. I spent most of the rally cursing Dieselgate for spitting Mikkelsen out of VW’s team too late to land a ride in the main WRC show.

Stéphane Lefebvre usually drives the C3 that Mikkelsen will take to Rally Italia Sardegna, and although the team says they’re not giving up on him as a driver just yet, hilariously, Citroën even seems to admit that they’ll probably get a better result with Mikkelsen behind the wheel. Team principal Yves Matton told the WRC:

This is not a sanction of any kind, nor does it call into question our investment in the young drivers. The decision is merely intended to maximize Citroën’s chances. Stéphane accepted that it was necessary to put the team first in this case.

Mikkelsen has more experience at the rally than the rest of the team, as the Citroën team didn’t do Rally Italia Sardegna last year.

That being said, there’s already talk of Mikkelsen doing more with the Citroën WRC team as part of a longer-term agreement, the WRC notes. The only question left there is where that will be in this year’s already-full WRC grid. It sounds like someone, somewhere might be losing a seat or going to another team. We’ll see!

This Is What A Fire-Spewing Formula 1 Turbo Failure Looks Like
Formula 1 went turbo this year and now, on the last race of the season, we get to see the massive smoke- and fire-spewing result when one of them fails. The driver is Lotus' Pastor Maldonado, who has not been the season's star driver, to say the least. Here's shaky...

Caption This: Caterham's Finbarr The Burninator
Bless his heart, Caterham Finbarr O'Connell tried to field questions from the media, as he came along with the team to help head up the operation for the weekend. He looks about as out of place as it gets. I have mixed feelings about Mr. O'Connell. On one hand, he's...

Red Bull Gives You Illegal Wings; Faces Grid Penalty
Per the BBC, the FIA will be the front wings on both Daniel Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel's Red Bull Racing cars. The FIA, which sanctions Formula One, claims that the current wings flex downwards too much, giving the Red Bull cars an unfair aerodynamic advantage at speed. Unless they successfully...

Force India Co-Owner Vijay Mallya Is Losing It On Twitter
Formula One's seem to have come to an inevitable head: someone's gotta flip their lid on social media. That someone is Force India co-owner Vijay Mallya, and he's expressing his displeasure by putting on blast for their cheaty wings. Earlier this week, a letter from Force India deputy team principal...

Fernando, Caterham Is Faster Than You
Fernando, Caterham Is Faster Than You
Well, in a straight line, anyway. Will Stevens' Caterham has less downforce than Fernando Alonso's Ferrari, allowing Stevens to out-drag Alonso and force the Ferrari driver to actually work for that pass. I like this Stevens fellow already. He's taking good defensive lines where he can and making people earn...

Why Mercedes Having A "Shrink" At Abu Dhabi Is Nothing Crazy
Several tabloids this week have run claiming that the Mercedes Formula One teams have a "shrink" on standby to console the loser of this year's World Driver's Championship after the final race at Abu Dhabi. Here's why they're all a sack of turds for singling Mercedes out on this. First...
