We Have No Idea How This Racer Did A Backflip And Walked Away
We Have No Idea How This Racer Did A Backflip And Walked Away-April 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:15

Russian race car driver Matevos Isaakyan was heading up the hill on the famous Eau Rouge corner during the Six Hours of Spa last weekend when his car spontaneously decided to do not one, but two backflips. And somehow, he was physically just fine after it.

You can hear what sounds like the engine of Isaakyan’s LMP1-class race car pegged to the rev-limiter as the car suddenly flies through the air. He was totally fine afterwards, however, reports.

It’s a little unclear as to what caused Isaakyan’s car to fly through the air, but points out that it may have something to do with the line he was on and a safety system that was designed to actually slow cars down:

The video shows clearly that the car was off track to driver’s left before the car lifted off, the ‘sausage’ kerbs previously installed to dissuade drivers from exceeding track limits have now been replaced by slightly raised painted lines.

Isaakyan’s car got caught at just the right angle, driving over those slightly-raised lines, for air to scoop itself under and send him soaring, the theory goes. But there’s still an investigation underway.

Isaakyan’s scary crash is reminiscent of a spate of race car flights from the 1990s, including the Porsche 911 GT1 and the Mercedes-Benz CLR.

Someone should paint “this side down” on Isaakyan’s car next time. You know, just in case.

F1 Could Change Its Qualifying Format Next Year to Make Things Less Predictable

F1 seems to be leaning toward the latter. reports that F1’s governing body, the FIA,...

This Ancient Laptop/Printer Is How You Recorded Race Car Data in 1990
Porsche ran one of its last-of-the-oddballs Indy racers at Rennsport Reunion this past weekend, briefly letting the turbo V8 sing in its 1990 March chassis. What I find particularly charming is how the team pulled some data from the car. I won’t go into too much depth on Porsche’s failed...
