Weekend Motorsports Roundup, May 17-18, 2014
Weekend Motorsports Roundup, May 17-18, 2014-March 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:50

Welcome to the Jalopnik Weekend Motorsports Roundup, where we let you know what's going on in the world of racing, where you can see it, and where you can talk about it all in one convenient place. Where else would you want to spend your weekend?

This weekend is the proverbial calm before the storm. That usually portends something bad, but in the world of racing, it portends something wondiferous. Two somethings, in fact.

Those somethings are the biggest race in all of racing, the Indy 500, and the other biggest race in all of racing, the Monaco Grand Prix.

(Fans of Le Mans and Daytona and the Bathurst are also welcome to apply for that title, I really just hand it out to any race that asks. Except for the Malaysian Grand Prix. It knows what it did.)

Both races have long and storied pasts, but this weekend all we get is some Indy qualifying and some Monegasque partying.

So when it comes to real racing, most of what we've got on TV this weekend consists of the NASCAR all-star race, which is, of course, an exhibition.

Okay, so when it comes to real-real racing on TV, there's a Nationwide race, a MotoGP race, for people that like that sort of thing, an airplane race, and, of course, some drag racing.

And none of that sounds too bad.

Late-Race Collision Decides WEC GTE Pro Championship
Late-Race Collision Decides WEC GTE Pro Championship
It seems like something out of a feature film that a champion would be decided in the last 15 minutes after 58 hours of competition. However, a screenwriter would have their script tossed in the trash if it included this as an ending. The championship for the GTE Pro class...
