Weekend Motorsports Roundup, October 18-19, 2014-May 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:49

Welcome to the Jalopnik , where we let you know what's going on in the world of racing, where you can see it, and where you can talk about it all in one convenient place. Where else would you want to spend your weekend?

This is a light week in racing, given that several major series are either wrapped up for the season (Tudor United SportsCar) or on hiatus for the week (Formula One).

MotoGP and NASCAR are holding the fort down on TV, though. Truck racin'! We get the trucks on TV, and they're at Talledega.

We get some cool series we don't usually see on American TV, too—namely, Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters and the Blancpain GT3 series. If you don't love the insanity that is a DTM racer, I'm not sure we can be friends anymore.

Last week's round of the Sprint Cup was . Will they behave this time? On one hand, you'd think everyone would try to be on their best behavior. On the other hand, the penalties for causing a big stir seem more like a slap on the wrist: a ludicrously small for Keselowski and no penalty whatsoever for Hamlin or Kenseth. Stewart, likewise, got a . Both Keselowski and Stewart are on a four-race probation.

Some things never change, and NASCAR's gonna NASCAR. Brad Keselowski got into a fight with both…

Will the embattled superstars at the bottom of the standings survive elimination in the last leg of the Contender Round of the Chase? We shall see. Four competitors get dropped from contention Sunday afternoon.

There's plenty going on outside of TV, though. The great rally across Mexico, , is this weekend. There's no TV coverage for that, but Eric Rood on recommends following on Facebook for occasional updates.

See posts, photos and more on Facebook.

Locally, our track day season is just warming up in Texas. Hey, it's finally cool enough for people to want to be outside. If you're near College Station, you can drop by Texas World Speedway and see the only racecar to have ever disproved the Jalopnik bump in action. (I'm running the 944 at a trackday, bro. Bro. BRO.)

Racers Crash On First Lap Of Indianapolis 500, Then Crash Under Yellow
Racers Crash On First Lap Of Indianapolis 500, Then Crash Under Yellow
It’s one thing to start the Indianapolis 500 with a crash near the back of the field. It’s another thing to have another crash under yellow further delay green laps of racing. Oops. So, effectively, the race really got to start from a single-file yellow-flag conga line, not so much...

One IndyCar Caught Fire Before The Race Even Started
Unfortunately for Conor Daly, his number 43 Smithfield-sponsored car was overly crispy before the race even started. Conor’s Schmidt Peterson Motorsports team said that the car’s exhaust system got hot and caused the fire. Them’s tough hogs. Daly was one supposed to be of the promising young talents in this...

Kimi Räikkönen Asks Politely For A Blue Flag At The Monaco Grand Prix
Just kidding! Ferrari’s Kimi Räikkönen asked where the blue flags were as he picked his way through backmarkers in his best Kimi-ese, earning him a nice bleep from the television censors. Never change, Kimi. Never change. Shortly after this, Max Verstappen’s Toro Rosso car terrifyingly ensuring that there wouldn’t be...

Montoya Drove From The Back To Win A Four-Way Battle For The Indy 500
The Indianapolis 500 went somewhat predictably for most of the race. The faster Chevrolets of Team Penske and Chip Ganassi Racing kept the top five spots for most of the day, edging out the Honda cars on speed. The big surprise was Juan Pablo Montoya coming back from 30th place...

Jimmie Johnson Mistakes NASCAR For Formula Drift
NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Jimmie Johnson claims he was trying to adjust the track bar in his car because it was too loose, but I know he secretly wanted more of that sweet, sweet oversteer. Johnson once again showed that he is a master of opposite lock in a situation...

All three Dale Coyne Racing cars were involved in an incident on pit lane, where the rush to get out of pit lane ended badly for two crew members working on Tristan Vautier’s car. After Ed Carpenter and Oriol Servia both , there was a lengthy yellow while those two...
