When You Run A Car Company You Should Take Your Cars Racing Yourself
When You Run A Car Company You Should Take Your Cars Racing Yourself-November 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:18

Few executives wouldn’t be caught dead fraternizing with employees lower on the totem pole. With many car companies you picture the corporate heads as elite members of society who are better at wearing fancy suits and pleasing shareholders than they are at being common fans of cars and racing.

Andy Palmer, CEO of Aston Martin, is not your typical cliché car business chief executive. Aston Martin Racing is also not the usual car company’s motorsports division. Andy loves racing, and has spent time in the seat blasting Aston Martins around tracks with quite a variety of endurance efforts, including the 24 Hours of Silverstone. Over the past weekend, while covering the Creventic 24H Series race at Circuit of The Americas, I got to experience this first hand.

Aston Martin Lagonda entered the Vantage GT8 with Andy Palmer, Peter Cate, John Hindhaugh, and Paul Hollywood as their drivers. There’s a joke about a CEO, a racing driver, a commentator, and a baker walking into a bar somewhere in there. After a brutal 24 hours on one of the most technical tracks on the planet, the #232 Aston Martin found itself finishing second in the SP3 class, with a ton of valuable knowledge and experience in the bag.

How Can One Driver Spin This Much In Their First Lap?
We all know That Guy. This is the ultimate expression of That Guy. Typically when someone like this goes out ultra-aggressive and spins on their first lap out of the pits, you just have a good chuckle at their expense and then they keep it together for the rest of...

NASCAR Published Daytona 500 Winnings After Saying They Wouldn't, Got Them Wrong
Before the season began, NASCAR swore they purse winnings after the races anymore. Then they released the wrong figures for the Daytona 500, and had to release a correction. What? By purse here, we’re not talking about the handbags Mrs. Krohn artfully coordinates with Krohn Racing’s lime green cars. We’re...

Formula One's New Qualifying System Makes My Brain Hurt
Formula One's New Qualifying System Makes My Brain Hurt
Instead of fixing something that was a significant problem with Formula One, the F1 Commission wants to tinker with their qualifying format. The new, more confusing elimination-based qualifying will still consist of three rounds, but only have two cars left running at the very end. It makes my head hurt....

Watch How An F1 Car's Tires Function As Part Of Its Suspension
It seems strange that ultra advanced Formula 1 cars have tires with big sidewalls like your grandpa’s Plymouth. But there’s a reason why there’s so much rubber; these tires function as much of an F1 car’s suspension. You see, the very tall tires have some give in them, and they...

Now This Is How You Pass Three Cars And A Helicopter
Sometimes you’ve got three cars in your way, and one dusty lane to get around them. That’s when you want a lot of skill, luck and bravery. And horsepower. Can never have too much horsepower. Epic moments like this are what make the Mint 400 “The Great American Race.” This...
