You Think Your Taxes Are Bad? NASCAR Drivers Have To File In 20 States
You Think Your Taxes Are Bad? NASCAR Drivers Have To File In 20 States-March 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:43

Today, April 15th, is Tax Day. And you think this is a problem for you, because you are ever-so-slightly disorganized. But today should be the one day you thank the Lord On High that you are not also a NASCAR driver, because doing a NASCAR driver’s taxes is a pit of the deepest, darkest, hottest hellfire.

We bandy the word ‘insane’ around here probably a bit too much at Jalopnik, but this time, it really is warranted. Because, as it turns out, athletes need to file income taxes in every state they compete in. That’s pretty bad for a professional footballist like Tom Brady, but as NASCAR driver Brad Keselowski points out, being a footballist is really not so bad at all:

Every, single, little, state. But it gets worse from there, because every state has different rules as to who actually needs to file a return, and what income tax actually needs to get paid. And by our count, NASCAR drivers, or rather, their accountants, have to know the tax code for 20 different states – Florida, Georgia, Nevada, Arizona, Virginia, Texas, Tennessee, Alabama, Kansas, North Carolina, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Kentucky, New Hampshire, Indiana, New York, South Carolina, and Illinois, and Michigan.

At least.

Because that’s just the main NASCAR circuit, and doesn’t count other types of racing that drivers may take part in, or where they might have other income sources. I’ll let H&R Block, the people who do a lot of taxes each year, explain:

Possibly the biggest tax obstacle of the professional athlete is the potential requirement to file a separate state tax return for each state the taxpayer earns income. Each state has its own tax system and tax laws which may or may not require the taxpayer to file a tax return and pay that state’s income tax on the income earned while in the state. On the other hand, some states do not have an income tax (Texas and Florida, for example). Each player must generally pay tax in the state the income is earned. For example, if a Missouri resident plays a game in Wisconsin and receives game day pay, the player will owe income tax to Wisconsin on the earnings from that game — while all other income is not taxed in Wisconsin.

In addition to the earnings in each state, a taxpayer generally must pay tax to his state of residency. Most states subject an individual to a tax on worldwide income if he/she is a resident of such state. Although, the state may grant tax credits or deductions for taxes paid to other states. Consequently, many professional athletes claim residency in Florida due to its lack of a state income tax.

And if that’s not complicated enough, you’ve also got travel deductions, charitable deductions, complications based on whether or not they’re also a team owner and thus operating as a business, and a whole host of other from Mephistopheles himself.

But to understand just how horrific in can be, I turned to Jalopnik’s racer-in-residence, :

In 2013, Parker’s tax return was 252 pages.

Safety in NASCAR is a big concern, but no one’s worrying about the biggest danger of all.

Death, by drowning in the tax code.

Apparently, "Michigan" is the name of a state where NASCAR races. I've never heard of this "Michigan" place, but I've updated the headline and the story to reflect its purported existence.

H/t to on the whole Michigan thing!

Riding In A 600 Horsepower Stadium Super Truck Is The Key To Happiness In Life
“Terrify me,” I told Stadium Super Trucks’ founder Robby Gordon. “It’ll make a better video.” I love watching sweet jumps, and Stadium Super Trucks feels like that old arcade game come to life, but with even more ridiculous jumps. It’s a wheel-to-wheel series full of identical 600-horsepower tube-frame race trucks...

Fernando Alonso Wants Everyone To Know He Needs A New Ride For 2018
Professional McLaren Formula One Fernando Alonso told that McLaren needs to start winning races by September for him to stay. Given that it’s more likely for space cats to discover unobtanium on Saturn by then, I think this is a nice way of telling everyone that he’s available for hire...
