Whilst the BMW i3 currently runs as an all-electric vehicle, reports are coming out that they may be looking to add a hydrogen fuel cell model into the mix.
BMW recently announced it would be working with Toyota to develop a new sports car and improve the fuel cell system together. We could be beginning to see the fruits of that labour. Fuel cells have often been touted as the way of the future but progress has been slow in developing the zero emissions technology.
Toyota has announced a fuel cell system for the 2015 Toyota FCV and its likely this same system would be used for the BMW i3 by 2016. The FCV has a claimed fuel range of around 500km but costs are stratospheric with the vehicle costing an equivalent of R700000.
