Building the NASCAR-Powered Lexus LFA Drift Car Wasn't Easy
Building the NASCAR-Powered Lexus LFA Drift Car Wasn't Easy-April 2024
2024-02-19 EST 22:11:12

One of the coolest builds of recent years is Yoichi Imamura’s . We saw it test and run a few events back in 2015 and 2016, though it never became the guy’s main car. Now we have a better idea of why: This thing was as expensive as you’d think and a pain to get to work.

Imamura is a legend in drifting, one of the most successful drivers in the sport’s history with multiple D1GP championships to his name, a big name at the top of the sport and still liked by old school heads who adore his OG Corolla. He also spent much of his career balancing driving with . Cool dude.

In any case, Video Option (the official media of D1GP) put out a little video the other day detailing how this thing got built, and how it wasn’t easy.

I’ll get it out of the way that when the car works, it looks absolutely unhinged. The V8 absolutely howls in a way that makes you not miss the old V10 (swapped out for the more durable and proven TRD engine), and the car looks as skittish and aggressive as you’d expect a front-engine supercar to be. Cut ahead to around 12:50 in the video and watch the front and rear skid out almost independently of each other, back sliding, front sliding, all sliding, the throttle blipping while Imamura slides into the corner.

The first issue with the build was cost, which is neatly explained in terms of how many other cars one could afford in its place. Eep.

The other is that it breaks. First it tears the entire rear end open:

Then it busts what looks like the front crossmember or some part of the subframe under the car on another test.

Add in the cost of wrecking the car and it’s no huge surprise that this build was maybe a step too far for a contact sport like drifting.

Still, it’s a reminder that the most interesting builds in the world of motorsports today are, of all things, drift cars.

Here's What The New F1 Safety Halo Looks Like From Inside The Car
has given us a great look at the obstructive view of the new design from a camera strapped to Toro Rosso driver Pierre Gasly’s noggin as he raced around the Monaco Grand Prix. There was some debate among the Jalopnik staff about whether the helmet cam footage reveals the new...

NASCAR Fan Pulled Off Charlotte Catch Fence By His Pants
Hold on, folks—we’ve got a climber. A NASCAR fan just had to get that perfect view (like the other views, only more likely to get you killed) from on top of Charlotte Motor Speedway’s catch fence during this weekend’s Coca-Cola 600, and that went just about as well as you’d...

Drones Chasing Drift Cars Through The Woods Is The Best Kind Of Madness
If you’re missing your daily dose of eye candy, the mad Latvian drift filmmakers at Robyworks—with the help of some drone racing friends—are here to help. This track looks delightfully crazy in its own right with the way it snakes through the trees. Trying to keep up with overpowered, tire-obliterating...

NASCAR’s Smart Fix For Its All-Star Race Could Actually Make Other Races Better
NASCAR’s Smart Fix For Its All-Star Race Could Actually Make Other Races Better
NASCAR used a vastly different aerodynamics package for the All-Star race this year, and the racing showed it. It went from the typical racing style of 1.5-mile tracks like All-Star host Charlotte Motor Speedway, which resembles a conga line full of folks who don’t want to touch each other, to...

Rallycross Driver Finishes Second After Driving Most Of A Race With His Hood Up
Rallycross Driver Finishes Second After Driving Most Of A Race With His Hood Up
Dirt-happy racers love to use the phrase “press on regardless,” but the inaugural Americas Rallycross event whipped out an epic display of that mantra in practice thanks to Timo Scheider. Scheider’s hood flopped up and blocked most of his windshield during most of one race, but did that stop him?...

See How Tilt-Shift Photography Makes Real Cars Look Like Toys
A friend sent me this video of car noises dubbed over little toys playing in a sandbox and I thought it was pretty cute. Then I learned, no, they’re not toys at all. This is just a very strange and interesting way to photograph cars, utilized in one of the...
