The other day, as I rifled through the that comprises the Jalopnik archives (it takes up half the office, and most cards have been defaced past the point of recognition with lewd comments and/or falafel recipes), I stumbled on . It was a Friday afternoon hangout, a place for readers and writers to hang out and chat. I sent it off to our Slack channel, and everyone agreed — it would be nice to hang out with you all a bit more. So, welcome, to the revived Friday chat.

It’s been an interesting week, to say the least. We all after a few days , and found ourselves awash with big news stories. , , and . A certain automotive publication even , featuring at least one writer who is definitely reconsidering his camera angles as he writes this.

That same writer, as a fun fact, is actually present in the comments of , as a college student asking for advice on breaking into the business. Mercedes Streeter is in there too, posting photos of Smarts and remaining wholly on-brand. That sort of connection, the sense of community between writers and editors and readers and commenters, is something I’ve always really appreciated about Jalopnik — hence this chat.

So, what’s up with you? Any fun weekend plans? Personally, I’ll be watching a tomorrow, and donating to support trans youth in the South. It’s car-related, so I’m counting it as relevant here. How about the past week, have you done any fun car projects recently? Tell us all about it! Kick back, grab your keyboard, and hang out with your favorite Jalopnik staff.

The Mazda RX500 Was A Pinball Machine On Wheels That Made Road Safety Fun
The Mazda RX500 is one of those cars that doesn’t fail to leave an impression on anyone. It’s half a century old at this point, but still provokes double takes and wide-eyed, mouth-agape expressions. Even today, you don’t see many vehicles like it. Today, the RX500 is remembered as...

Blip: Everybody, Meet The Concept Of "Cool"
Just take a moment and imagine seeing somebody dressed like this dude, with his oxblood-red jacket slung over his shoulder like that, big-ass shades firmly planted on his face, in person. Just take a moment and drink in that glory. Whatever you’re feeling, bring that energy to your weekend...

Volkswagen Is Coming After Tesla And Wants To Be The World's Biggest EV Maker
Volkswagen Is Coming After Tesla And Wants To Be The World's Biggest EV Maker
Volkswagen is talking the talk, American Airlines’ pilots and flight attendants aren’t happy, and sodium-ion batteries. All that and more in for July 29, 2021. It is kind of ridiculous that the world’s biggest or second-biggest automaker () is playing catch up on EVs with Tesla, a young punk...

Blip: Pao, Right In The Woods
This morning I dropped the kid off at farm camp, where a horse licked his head the other day, and on the way back I saw a little almost-road into some woods that was just too inviting to ignore, so I drove down a path paved with pine litter...

Is Mainstream Car Development Stagnating? Let's Figure It Out
The other day in the Jalopnik Slack room, in between the usual sharing pictures of confusing rashes and pretending to read various writers’ deeply unsettling erotic poetry, our Editor-In-Something Rory stated that he felt that auto development was stagnating, as cars from 10 or even 20 years ago just...
